SKIN WHITENING OBSESSION
Skin Whitening, Skin lightening,Skin bleaching or Skin toning are terms used interchangeably, when it comes to changing the colour of ones skin
The craze to be light skinned is very real and there is a gradual obsession for ladies and guys to change their skin colour from black to a lighter Shade. No thanks to the media and bill board campaigns that portray a light skin as the ideal skin colour! No wonder the Nigerian beauty industry is booming. But the fact still remains that skin whitening is so rampart. Gone are the days when Celebrities were the only ones who wanted to change their skin colour. Most ladies especially think it’s the real deal.
Most skin lightening products contain hydroquinone, mercury And harsh steroids which are very harmful to the skin. The point still remains that the African market is filled with products that contain these harsh chemicals and there seem to be no regulation as consumers are left to their fate.
People prepare skin whitening creams, label it and sell to the gullible public. The market is also flooded with fake skin whitening creams. We have a whole lot of fake popular brands which consumers mistake for the original. Various reasons Ladies/ guys give for skin lightening include insecurities associated with aging, wrinkles, scars, uneven skin tone, desire to please a particular partner,Etc
Over use or abuse of skin lightening and skin bleaching products can lead to an unnatural white colour with a horrible grayish tint. Ever seen skin whitening gone wrong. They have this corpse like look! It also leaves other parts Of the body such as the legs, ears, knuckles etc permanently dark. There could be redness, itching and patches in the affected area. This might put the individual at the risk of cancer as well as kidney and liver diseases
If you must lighten go for organic products that contain vitamins and minerals that help even out skin tone or go for high end products that do not contain those harsh chemicals that damage the skin.
On point dear!

What a significant coincidence. Just back from a social function at the National Stadium at Surulere Lagos where a gentle man walked to me and said ‘ Madam, I heard you introduced as a woman leader, please do some thing about these women who are slowly committing suicide in the name of skin lightening. Looking at a lady beside us who I believed spurred him to that comment, I could count the green veins on her hands and I was short of words. Skin lightening obsession should really be on the front burner now. Thanks Jenny Soul for kickstarting the discussion
I can’t stop shaking my head
Do these people understand the side effect of bleaching
