A 22-year-old man in South Africa has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after being convicted of raping his biological mother at their home in the Northern Cape.
The man was sentenced by the Carnarvon Regional Court after pleading guilty to the offence, which occurred in November 2025. His identity has not been publicly disclosed to protect the privacy of his 42-year-old mother.
The case has shocked the local community because the victim was attacked by her own son while she was asleep at their family home in the Vosburg area, near Carnarvon.

According to evidence presented in court, the incident happened on November 23, 2025.
The man’s mother and her life partner had reportedly been drinking before going to sleep at their home. The accused had also been drinking at a friend’s house before returning home later that night.
After arriving at the residence, he found his mother and her partner asleep.
The court heard that he then sexually assaulted his mother while she was unconscious.
The woman eventually woke up during the assault and discovered that her attacker was her son.
She confronted him, after which he left the house and fled.
The victim subsequently told her partner what had happened, and the incident was reported to the police.
DNA evidence linked suspect to crime
The investigation was handled by detectives from the South African Police Service’s Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.
According to reports, DNA evidence later connected the accused to the crime.
The man had initially denied the allegation following his arrest, but the DNA evidence contradicted his denial. He eventually pleaded guilty to the rape charge during court proceedings.
The evidence against him included the victim’s account and forensic evidence gathered during the investigation.
Court imposes 20-year prison sentence
The Carnarvon Regional Court sentenced the 22-year-old to 20 years’ direct imprisonment.
The court also ordered that he be placed on South Africa’s National Register for Sex Offenders, meaning his details will be recorded under the country’s system for tracking convicted sexual offenders.
The sentence followed consideration of the circumstances surrounding the offence and the evidence presented by the prosecution.
The case was prosecuted in the Northern Cape, where authorities have continued efforts to strengthen responses to sexual and gender-based violence.
Mother describes deep betrayal
The victim, who was described in court reports as a single mother, was left deeply traumatised by the attack.
