Veteran Nollywood actress Patience Ozokwor, popularly known as Mama G, has warned parents against excessively pampering their children, saying overindulgence could prevent young people from developing the resilience and independence needed to succeed in life.

The respected actress made the remarks while discussing parenting, wealth and inheritance, urging parents to think carefully about how they raise their children and prepare them for adulthood.

According to Ozokwor, parents who try too hard to ensure their children never experience difficulties could unintentionally make it harder for them to cope with real-life challenges.

“When you say, ‘I don’t want my children to suffer what I suffered when I was growing up’, you see, that’s the best way to destroy your children,” she said.

Ozokwor clarified that she was not encouraging parents to deliberately make their children suffer or deny them basic needs.

Instead, she encouraged parents to allow their children to experience manageable challenges and learn how to overcome difficulties on their own.

The actress argued that children who are given everything without having to work for it may struggle to appreciate the effort required to achieve success.

She believes parents should guide their children while allowing them to develop important life skills through experience.

According to her, providing constant comfort may sometimes prevent young people from learning how to solve problems, make decisions and take responsibility for their actions.

Wealth and inheritance

The veteran actress also touched on the issue of wealth and inheritance, particularly the tendency of some parents to make their children’s lives completely comfortable because they have the financial means to do so.

Ozokwor’s comments suggest that financial success should not be measured only by what parents can provide for their children, but also by the values and abilities they pass on to the next generation.

She encouraged parents with financial resources to teach their children the value of hard work rather than simply giving them access to everything they desire.

For her, wealth should be used as an opportunity to provide education, guidance and a strong foundation rather than creating complete dependence.

Children need responsibility

Ozokwor’s warning comes amid ongoing conversations about parenting styles and the challenges young people face when transitioning into adulthood.

Parents naturally want to protect their children from the difficulties they experienced while growing up. However, the actress believes that completely shielding children from hardship may not always prepare them for the realities of adult life.

She suggested that children should gradually be given responsibilities appropriate to their age and circumstances.

Learning to work for certain things, make mistakes and deal with disappointment can help young people develop confidence and resilience.

Mama G shares a parenting lesson

Patience Ozokwor, one of Nigeria’s most recognisable veteran actresses, has built a reputation for portraying strong and memorable characters throughout her Nollywood career.

Her comments on parenting have therefore attracted attention because they go beyond entertainment and touch on an issue affecting families across different social and economic backgrounds.

The actress’s message is not that parents should withhold love or deliberately expose their children to suffering.

Rather, she appears to be advocating for a balanced approach in which children receive love, care and support while also being taught discipline, responsibility and independence.

The importance of preparing children for adulthood

For many parents, protecting their children from hardship is a natural expression of love.

However, Ozokwor’s argument is that children also need opportunities to develop the skills they will require when their parents are no longer able to provide for them.

Teaching children how to work, save, solve problems and take responsibility can help them become more confident and self-reliant adults.

Parents can therefore support their children without doing everything for them.

The veteran actress’s remarks have sparked conversations about whether modern parents sometimes go too far in trying to give their children a better childhood than the one they experienced themselves.

While every family has different circumstances, her central message remains that love should not become overprotection.

Parents can provide opportunities for their children while still allowing them to understand the value of effort and perseverance.

Ozokwor’s warning ultimately encourages parents to look beyond providing immediate comfort and focus on preparing their children for the responsibilities and challenges of adulthood.
