American filmmaker, actor and producer Tyler Perry has revealed that he has no plans to get married, explaining that his concern is not marriage itself but the financial consequences he has seen people experience after divorce.

Perry made the remarks during an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, where he spoke candidly about why he prefers to remain unmarried.

“It’s not the marriage that bothers me. It’s the divorce. Everybody that I know that did well and went broke, it was because of a divorce, so I’m good just being free,” he said.

Perry’s explanation centred on what he described as the financial fallout he has witnessed when marriages end.

The filmmaker said he had seen people who were doing well financially lose their wealth following divorce. He presented those experiences as a major reason he does not want to marry.

His remarks were personal rather than a claim that every divorce leads to financial ruin. Divorce can have different financial consequences depending on a couple’s circumstances, assets, agreements and applicable laws.

For Perry, however, the examples he has seen appear to have shaped his decision to remain unmarried.

Comments made during Jennifer Hudson interview

Perry shared his views while appearing on The Jennifer Hudson Show. The conversation came as he promoted his latest film, Why Did I Get Married Again?, the newest instalment in his marriage-themed film franchise.

The show’s official coverage of Perry’s appearance also highlighted the discussion about why marriage is not for him, alongside a birthday surprise arranged by host Jennifer Hudson.

The timing created an interesting contrast: Perry was discussing his decision to avoid marriage while promoting a film series that explores the complications, pressures and emotional challenges of married life.

A filmmaker whose work often explores relationships

Perry has built a successful career creating films, television shows and stage productions, many of which examine love, marriage, family and relationship struggles.

His Why Did I Get Married? franchise has particularly focused on couples navigating trust, commitment and conflict. The latest film, Why Did I Get Married Again?, continues that relationship-centred storytelling.

Although his creative work frequently explores marriage, Perry’s personal comments make clear that he does not see marriage as something he wants for himself.

Perry’s personal life

He shares a son, Aman, with his former partner, Gelila Bekele. He has previously spoken publicly about being single and has generally kept details of his private relationships away from the spotlight.

His latest comments reinforce his stated preference to remain unmarried. They do not, however, mean he has rejected love or relationships altogether; his remarks focused specifically on marriage and his concerns about divorce.

Online discussion follows his remarks

Perry’s comments have prompted conversation among viewers, particularly because of his status as a filmmaker whose work often examines marriage.

Some may relate to his concerns about financial security, while others may view his decision differently. His statement reflects his own experiences and priorities rather than a universal conclusion about marriage or divorce.

For now, he has made his position clear: he is comfortable remaining unmarried, and the possibility of divorce is a major reason behind that choice.

Speaking on The Jennifer Hudson Show, Perry said marriage itself does not bother him, but the possibility of divorce does.

“It’s not the marriage that bothers me. It’s the divorce. Everybody that I know that did well and went broke, it was because of a divorce, so I’m good just being free,” he said.
