Aliko Dangote’s reported fortune has risen to $51 billion following the launch of the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals’ initial public offering (IPO) on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX).

The reported revaluation places the Nigerian billionaire among the world’s wealthiest people. However, the figure is an estimate of his net worth, not money raised through the share offer.

The refinery’s IPO opened on September 14, 2026, with an offer of 4.1 billion ordinary shares priced at ₦525 each. The company is seeking to raise approximately ₦2.15 trillion to support its expansion plans.

The public offer drew substantial investor interest soon after it opened.

The Guardian reported that the NGX had posted figures indicating approximately ₦1.48 trillion from 402,634 deals within the first hour of the offer. The exchange’s post was later deleted, according to the report.

The early figure should be treated carefully: it was reported as money pooled or recorded through transactions, not as confirmation that the entire ₦1.5 trillion had been finally allotted or settled.

The offer is scheduled to close on October 13, 2026, subject to the terms in the prospectus.

What the refinery is offering

The IPO comprises 4.1 billion new ordinary shares at ₦525 per share. If fully subscribed, the offer is expected to raise about ₦2.15 trillion.

Investors can subscribe for a minimum of 10 shares, costing ₦5,250. The offer is designed to allow individual investors, as well as institutional and other eligible investors, to acquire a stake in the refinery.

The company says the proceeds will support its long-term growth and expansion plans. Dangote has outlined an ambition to increase the refinery’s capacity from 700,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day.

Why Dangote’s reported wealth is rising

The refinery’s public offering places a market value on a major part of Dangote’s business empire and could affect estimates of his personal wealth.

Reuters reported that the IPO is seeking a valuation of about $50 billion for the refinery, while the Guardian said the listing could significantly increase Dangote’s estimated fortune.

A billionaire’s net worth is not the same as cash in a bank account. It is an estimate based largely on the value of assets and ownership stakes, which can change as valuations and market conditions change.

The reported $51 billion figure should therefore be understood as an estimate based on wealth rankings, rather than money Dangote personally received from the IPO.

A major moment for Nigeria’s capital market

The refinery’s IPO is being presented as an opportunity for more Nigerians to participate in ownership of one of the country’s largest industrial projects.

The offer also comes as the refinery reports strong financial results. Reuters reported that it recorded a net profit of $1.82 billion on revenue exceeding $13 billion in the first half of 2026, reversing a loss in the previous year.

Despite the scale of the offer and strong early interest, prospective investors should read the approved prospectus and consider the risks before subscribing. Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission has advised investors to use only officially approved channels and to verify platforms before providing personal or financial information.

What happens next?

The IPO remains open until October 13, 2026, according to the published offer timetable. The total amount ultimately raised will depend on subscriptions and the final outcome of the offer.

For now, the reported rise in Dangote’s fortune and the strong early demand for refinery shares have made the IPO a major business story in Nigeria.

The key distinction is that the $51 billion figure is a reported estimate of Dangote’s wealth, while ₦2.15 trillion is the target amount the refinery hopes to raise if the share offer is fully subscribed.
