Nigerian street-hop sensation Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, has publicly apologised to fans, organisers and supporters after dramatically walking out of his highly anticipated celebrity boxing rematch against actor Charles Okocha.

The apology comes just hours after the much-publicised bout ended in controversy when the singer refused to continue after the opening round, handing victory to his longtime rival.

The rematch, which took place on Friday, July 31, 2026, had generated significant excitement among fans of both celebrities following their previous encounter. Many expected another entertaining showdown, but the contest came to an abrupt end when Portable decided not to return for the second round.

His unexpected withdrawal left spectators disappointed and sparked widespread reactions across social media, with many questioning why the singer abandoned the fight.

Portable apologises to organisers and fans

In an official statement released on Saturday through his management, Zeh Nation/Dr Zeh, Portable expressed regret over how the event unfolded.

The management apologised to the organisers, the event crew, supporters, family members and everyone who attended the celebrity boxing match expecting an exciting contest.

According to the statement, the team understands the disappointment many fans felt after the singer decided not to continue with the bout.

“We sincerely apologise to the organisers, Balmoral Group, the entire event team, our fans, friends, family, and everyone who came out to support Portable at tonight’s celebrity boxing event,” the statement read.

The management further appealed to Nigerians to respect Portable’s decision despite the backlash that has followed the incident.

Management urges understanding

Acknowledging the widespread criticism that followed the match, Portable’s management admitted that emotions often run high during competitive sporting events.

The statement, however, maintained that the singer made his decision based on his own perspective and urged the public to avoid rushing to judgment.

“We understand the disappointment caused by the outcome of the fight and by Portable’s decision to step away after the first round. While emotions can run high in moments like these, we respectfully ask everyone to respect his decision and perspective.”

Although the statement stopped short of explaining exactly why Portable refused to continue fighting, it suggested that there were personal reasons behind the decision.

As of the time of writing, Portable himself has not released a detailed explanation regarding what happened inside the ring.

Charles Okocha declared winner

With Portable refusing to continue after the opening round, actor Charles Okocha was declared the winner of the celebrity boxing rematch.

The victory marks another memorable chapter in the long-running rivalry between the two entertainers, whose online exchanges and public disagreements have repeatedly captured the attention of fans.

The celebrity boxing contest was organised primarily as an entertainment event designed to settle their differences inside the ring while giving fans an exciting spectacle.

Instead, the match ended much earlier than expected, leaving many spectators frustrated.

Social media reacts

Following the controversial ending, social media platforms were flooded with mixed reactions.

Some users criticised Portable for quitting the fight, arguing that he should have continued regardless of the outcome.

Others defended the singer, insisting that every athlete has the right to withdraw if they no longer feel comfortable or safe competing.

Several fans also praised Portable for apologising quickly instead of ignoring the disappointment experienced by supporters.

The incident has since become one of the most discussed entertainment stories online, with clips from the opening round continuing to circulate across various social media platforms.

Portable’s history of controversy

Portable is no stranger to making headlines.

Since rising to fame with his breakout hit Zazoo Zeh, the singer has remained one of Nigeria’s most controversial entertainers.

His career has often been accompanied by public feuds, legal disputes, outspoken interviews and viral social media moments.

Despite the controversies, Portable has maintained a loyal fan base that continues to support his music and public appearances.

His larger-than-life personality has helped keep him relevant within Nigeria’s entertainment industry, even when public opinion appears divided.

Celebrity boxing continues to grow

Celebrity boxing has become increasingly popular across Nigeria in recent years, bringing together entertainers, influencers and public figures for exhibition bouts that attract significant online attention.

These events combine sports and entertainment, often drawing audiences eager to watch celebrities settle personal rivalries inside the ring.

While many of the contests are organised primarily for entertainment, they also require participants to meet professional boxing standards and safety regulations.

Portable’s withdrawal has reignited discussions about the importance of adequate preparation and mental readiness before participating in combat sports.

What’s next for Portable?

Although the boxing match ended on a disappointing note, many fans believe Portable will quickly shift his focus back to music.

The singer remains one of Nigeria’s busiest performers and continues to release new songs while maintaining an active presence on social media.

Whether he chooses to return to celebrity boxing in the future remains uncertain.

For now, his public apology appears aimed at repairing relationships with organisers and reassuring supporters that he appreciates their continued loyalty despite the controversial outcome.

While opinions remain divided over his decision to walk away from the fight, Portable’s apology signals an attempt to move beyond the controversy and refocus attention on his entertainment career.
