The family of late Nollywood legend John Ikechukwu Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, has spoken publicly about the severe financial hardship they have been facing since the beloved actor passed away in March 2024.
In an emotional revelation that has touched many Nigerians, members of the actor’s family disclosed that life has become increasingly difficult, forcing some of his children to drop out of school while the household struggles to meet basic living expenses.
The details emerged during a recent visit by content creator King Mitchy, who met with the family and documented their living conditions. During the interaction, Mr Ibu’s wife and children shared the challenges they have endured over the past months following the actor’s death.

According to the family, Mr Ibu’s only daughter and two sons are currently out of school because there is no money available to cover their educational expenses. They revealed that the financial burden has become overwhelming, making it impossible to continue paying school fees and other essential costs associated with their education.
Beyond the educational challenges, the family disclosed that they have also been living without electricity and running water for several weeks.
Mr Ibu’s wife explained that unpaid bills have resulted in their electricity supply being disconnected for more than two months. Without regular access to power, the family has had to look for alternative ways to charge their mobile phones and carry out everyday activities.
Speaking about their situation, she revealed that the family has resorted to fetching water from a nearby well because they cannot afford other options.
“We fetched water from the well because I have not paid the house rent. They even cut my light since two months now. No light since. Every night we go to look for where to charge our phones and it’s not easy,” she said.
Her comments highlighted the difficult reality faced by the family despite Mr Ibu’s popularity and contributions to Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
For decades, Mr Ibu was regarded as one of Nollywood’s most beloved comic actors. His unique style of comedy, expressive facial reactions, and unforgettable performances earned him millions of fans across Africa and beyond.
He appeared in numerous successful films and became one of the most recognizable faces in the Nigerian movie industry.
However, his family’s recent revelations have sparked conversations about the welfare of entertainers and the financial realities many families face after losing their primary breadwinner.
Mr Ibu’s daughter also spoke during the visit, expressing gratitude to her mother for her resilience and dedication despite the hardships.
She acknowledged the sacrifices her mother has made to ensure the family survives during this difficult period.
“I want to thank God for my mom, and she tried everything she can to feed us, pay our school fees, and make us happy,” she said.
The young girl then made an emotional appeal to Nigerians and members of the entertainment industry who worked closely with her father during his lifetime.
“So Nigerians, if you were in the industry with my dad, you’re seeing us now, come and meet us,” she pleaded.
Her appeal has since generated reactions on social media, where many Nigerians expressed sympathy for the family and called on colleagues, friends, and well-wishers to provide support.
Many social media users questioned how the family of such a celebrated entertainer could be facing severe financial difficulties barely two years after his passing.
Others argued that the situation underscores the importance of financial planning, insurance, and structured welfare systems within the entertainment industry.
According to Mr Ibu’s wife, the situation became even more emotional recently when the children’s school reportedly sent another reminder regarding unpaid school fees.
The message served as a painful reminder of the financial obstacles standing in the way of the children’s education and future aspirations.
Mr Ibu’s health struggles before his death were widely publicized and attracted national attention.
In 2023, the veteran actor faced serious health complications that led to multiple hospitalizations. Nigerians rallied around him during that period as fundraising efforts were launched to support his medical treatment.
In November 2023, doctors amputated one of his legs after a prolonged illness that reportedly required seven surgeries.
The development shocked fans across the country, many of whom had grown up watching his movies and comedic performances.
Despite efforts to save his life, Mr Ibu passed away on March 2, 2024, at the age of 62 following a cardiac arrest.
His death marked the end of an era for Nollywood and left a significant void in Nigeria’s entertainment landscape.
More than a year after his passing, the actor’s family is now appealing for assistance as they struggle to rebuild their lives.
The revelation has reignited discussions about how society supports the families of deceased entertainers and public figures.
As calls for assistance continue to grow, many Nigerians are hopeful that individuals, organizations, and colleagues within the entertainment industry will respond to the family’s appeal and help provide relief during this challenging period.
For now, the family remains focused on survival while hoping for support that could help restore stability, return the children to school, and improve their living conditions.
Their story serves as a sobering reminder that fame does not always guarantee long-term financial security and that behind the memories of a celebrated entertainer is a family still struggling to move forward after a painful loss.
