Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has sparked discussion among football fans after jokingly admitting that he hopes many of his players are eliminated from the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup as soon as possible.

The Portuguese coach made the light-hearted remark during an appearance on the BeastModeOn podcast, where he discussed the challenges managers face during major international tournaments.

Mourinho explained that while supporters naturally want their national teams and favorite players to succeed on the biggest stage, club managers often have a different perspective.

According to him, extended participation in a major tournament can significantly disrupt preseason preparations, leaving coaches with limited time to work with key players before the start of a new campaign.

When asked what he was most looking forward to during the World Cup, Mourinho delivered a response that immediately attracted attention.

“What am I looking forward to in the World Cup? I want Real Madrid players to lose,” he said.

“Because I want them back for pre-season with me in July!”

Although the comment was clearly made in a humorous manner, it reflects a genuine concern shared by many club managers whenever international competitions take place.

Real Madrid currently have several high-profile players representing their countries at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Among them are French stars Kylian Mbappe and Aurelien Tchouameni, Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior, German defender Antonio Rudiger, and Spanish international Marc Cucurella.

Many of these players are representing countries considered strong contenders for the World Cup title, meaning they could remain involved in the tournament until its final stages.

While such success would undoubtedly be celebrated by their national teams and supporters, it could create challenges for Mourinho as he prepares Real Madrid for the upcoming club season.

International tournaments often leave players physically and mentally exhausted due to the intensity of the competition.

Those who reach the latter rounds frequently receive extended breaks after returning to their clubs, reducing the amount of time available for preseason training.

For managers, preseason is one of the most important periods of the year.

It provides an opportunity to improve fitness levels, introduce tactical adjustments, integrate new signings, and prepare players for the demanding months ahead.

When key players return late, coaches may struggle to implement their plans effectively before competitive fixtures begin.

Mourinho’s comments therefore highlight the delicate balance between international football and club responsibilities.

While clubs invest heavily in developing and maintaining world-class players, national teams understandably want those same players available for major tournaments.

The issue has long been a source of tension in football.

Many managers have openly expressed frustration when players return injured, fatigued, or unavailable after international duty.

Over the years, several top coaches have admitted privately that they sometimes prefer their players to exit tournaments early in order to protect their fitness and availability for club football.

However, few say it as openly and humorously as Mourinho.

Known for his candid personality and memorable quotes, the Portuguese manager has built a reputation for delivering honest and entertaining comments throughout his career.

His latest remark is already being viewed by many fans as another classic Mourinho moment.

Despite joking about wanting his players eliminated, there is little doubt that Mourinho remains proud of the large number of Real Madrid stars participating in the tournament.

Having numerous players selected for the World Cup is generally viewed as a reflection of a club’s quality and success.

Real Madrid’s squad includes some of the best footballers in the world, and their presence at the competition reinforces the club’s status as one of football’s elite institutions.

For the players themselves, representing their countries at a World Cup remains one of the greatest achievements in football.

Many dream of lifting the famous trophy and adding their names to the history of the game.

As a result, they are unlikely to share Mourinho’s wish for an early exit.

Instead, most will be focused on helping their nations progress as far as possible in the competition.

With the tournament continuing to deliver drama and excitement, several Real Madrid players remain among the key figures expected to influence the outcome.

Whether they return to Madrid early or remain involved until the final stages, Mourinho will undoubtedly be monitoring their performances closely.

For now, his comments have provided fans with a humorous reminder of the different priorities that exist between club and international football.

While supporters hope to see their favorite stars shine on the world’s biggest stage, Mourinho is already thinking ahead to preseason training and the challenges that await Real Madrid in the months ahead.

As the World Cup progresses, the Real Madrid manager may find himself in the unusual position of cheering against his own players—not out of disappointment, but because he wants them back in training as quickly as possible.
