The global music community is mourning the loss of Kanya King, the visionary founder of the MOBO Awards, who has died at the age of 57 following a battle with colon cancer.

King’s passing was confirmed on June 5, with tributes pouring in from artists, industry leaders, fans, and cultural organizations who recognized her enormous contribution to music and the advancement of Black talent.

According to a statement released by the MOBO Organization, King passed away peacefully on June 3, surrounded by family members, close friends, and loved ones after what was described as a courageous battle with the illness.

The organization expressed deep sadness over the loss of the woman whose determination and vision helped create one of the most influential music award platforms in the United Kingdom.

In its statement, the organization described King as a fearless advocate for Black music, culture, and creativity whose work opened doors for countless artists over the past three decades.

Her death comes more than a year after she publicly revealed her colon cancer diagnosis, a disclosure that inspired many people facing similar health challenges.

As news of her passing spread, tributes emerged from across the entertainment industry, with many highlighting the lasting impact she had on British and global music culture.

Kanya King founded the Music of Black Origin Awards, popularly known as the MOBO Awards, in 1996.

At the time, Black music genres and artists often struggled to receive recognition from mainstream award ceremonies despite their growing influence on popular culture.

Recognizing this gap, King set out to create a platform dedicated to celebrating excellence in Black music and providing visibility to talented artists whose contributions were frequently overlooked.

The journey, however, was far from easy.

According to the MOBO Organization, King faced significant skepticism when she first introduced the idea.

Many people reportedly doubted that a dedicated awards platform celebrating Black music could succeed on a national scale.

Undeterred by criticism and obstacles, she took a bold step by remortgaging her home to fund the project and turn her vision into reality.

That decision would ultimately transform the music landscape in the United Kingdom and beyond.

Over the years, the MOBO Awards became a major cultural institution, helping launch and support the careers of numerous artists across genres including hip-hop, R&B, grime, reggae, gospel, Afrobeats, jazz, and soul music.

The platform provided opportunities for emerging talent while also recognizing established stars who had made significant contributions to the industry.

Through the awards, audiences around the world were introduced to groundbreaking artists whose influence continues to shape modern music.

King’s work extended beyond organizing an annual awards ceremony.

She became a symbol of resilience, entrepreneurship, and cultural empowerment.

Her story inspired many young people, particularly women and individuals from underrepresented communities, to pursue ambitious goals regardless of the challenges they faced.

The MOBO Organization reflected on this legacy by describing her as a single mother from a council estate in Kilburn who refused to accept limitations imposed by others.

Despite being told that her vision would fail, she remained committed to building something meaningful.

Her determination eventually transformed the MOBO Awards into one of the most respected music brands in the United Kingdom.

In recognition of her contributions, King received numerous honors throughout her career.

She was celebrated not only for promoting music but also for championing diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities within the entertainment industry.

Many artists have credited the MOBO Awards with providing early recognition that helped elevate their careers to new heights.

Following her passing, the organization announced that the 2026 MOBO Awards, which will mark the event’s 30th anniversary, will be dedicated to her memory.

Organizers revealed that every performance, tribute, and special moment during the ceremony will honor the woman whose vision made the event possible.

For many in the industry, this year’s celebration will serve as both a commemoration of her achievements and a reminder of the impact one determined individual can have on an entire generation.

Beyond awards and accolades, Kanya King leaves behind a legacy of courage, innovation, and cultural advocacy.

Her work changed perceptions, created opportunities, and amplified voices that might otherwise have gone unheard.

She demonstrated that meaningful change often begins with a single idea backed by persistence and belief.

As tributes continue to arrive from around the world, many people are reflecting on the extraordinary journey of a woman who transformed a personal dream into a global movement.

Though Kanya King is no longer here, the platform she created and the countless lives she touched will ensure that her influence continues for generations to come.

Her story remains a powerful reminder that vision, determination, and courage can leave a lasting mark on history.
