Nigerian football legend Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has opened up about one of the biggest financial decisions he made during his successful football career, revealing that he bought houses for members of his family to ensure they would never become homeless.

The former Super Eagles captain said he also pays school fees for their children and provides startup capital to help relatives establish businesses, but believes everyone must eventually take responsibility for their own lives.
Okocha made the remarks during an interview on the LongForm Podcast, where he reflected on family responsibilities, financial discipline and the importance of empowering loved ones rather than creating long-term dependence.

Okocha explains why he invested in his family
Speaking during the interview, the football icon said providing homes for his relatives was one of the most important investments he made after achieving success in professional football.
According to him, owning a home removes one of life’s biggest financial burdens and gives families a stable foundation to build on.
“I bought houses for my family so they’ll never be homeless,” Okocha said.
He explained that beyond providing accommodation, he also took responsibility for paying the school fees of his relatives’ children and supporting them financially by helping them establish businesses.
Startup capital comes with responsibility
Okocha stressed that while he is willing to help family members get started financially, he expects them to manage the opportunities responsibly.
He believes financial assistance should empower people to become independent rather than create permanent dependence.
“I pay their children’s school fees and even give them startup capital to start businesses.
“If they fail after that, it’s none of my business. I have suffered enough, and I can’t keep suffering,” he said.
The former midfielder explained that after removing the burden of paying rent and providing business opportunities, each individual must work hard to sustain themselves.
‘They can never be homeless’
The former Bolton Wanderers and Paris Saint-Germain star said the houses he purchased ensure that his relatives will always have a place to live regardless of future financial challenges.
“I bought houses for them, so there is no house rent.
“So why can’t you just manage your capital, the business I have started for you to feed your family?
“So if you can’t do that, what else do you expect from me?
“At least, I make sure they can never be homeless.”
His comments have resonated with many Nigerians who believe supporting family members should include helping them become financially independent rather than providing endless financial assistance.
