Sean “Diddy” Combs has been named on the witness list for the long-awaited trial over the 1996 killing of rapper Tupac Shakur, as prosecutors reportedly seek to link the music mogul to allegations surrounding the fatal shooting.

The development emerged as opening statements began in the Las Vegas trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis, the only person ever charged in connection with Tupac’s death.

Davis has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.

Diddy Named on Witness List

Sean “Diddy” Combs, one of the most prominent figures in hip-hop, has been included on the prosecution’s witness list in the Tupac Shakur murder trial.

His name appearing in the proceedings has attracted renewed attention to long-standing questions surrounding Tupac’s death and the rivalry between figures associated with Death Row Records and Bad Boy Records during the 1990s.

However, being named on a witness list does not by itself mean that Diddy has been accused of committing a crime or that he will necessarily testify.

The precise significance of his inclusion will depend on how prosecutors use the evidence and whether individual witnesses are ultimately called.

Prosecutors Claim Tupac’s Killing Was Revenge

Prosecutors allege that Tupac’s killing was an act of revenge following an earlier confrontation involving members of rival gangs.

Davis is accused of helping arrange the attack and supplying the weapon used in the shooting.

Prosecutors are not alleging that Davis personally fired the fatal shots.

Instead, their case centres on the claim that he helped orchestrate the attack.

Davis faces one count of murder with the use of a deadly weapon and an allegation involving the promotion, furtherance or assistance of a criminal gang.

How Tupac Was Shot

Tupac was in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, after travelling to the city to watch heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson fight at the MGM Grand.

Following the boxing match, Tupac was riding in a BMW driven by Death Row Records co-founder Suge Knight.

The vehicle was travelling through Las Vegas when a white Cadillac reportedly pulled alongside it.

Gunfire was then unleashed at the BMW.

Tupac was struck multiple times.

He was taken to hospital but died from his injuries six days later at the age of 25.

His death shocked the music world and became one of the most enduring unsolved mysteries in hip-hop history.

Davis Accused of Orchestrating Attack

Davis, now 63, was previously associated with the South Side Compton Crips and has acknowledged his presence around events connected to the case.

Prosecutors allege that he helped organise the attack and provided the firearm used in the shooting.

The prosecution’s case is therefore focused on whether Davis played a sufficient role in planning and facilitating Tupac’s killing to be held legally responsible for murder.

Davis has denied the murder charge and pleaded not guilty.

His defence will have the opportunity to challenge the prosecution’s evidence and arguments throughout the trial.

Nearly 30 Years After Tupac’s Death

The trial comes nearly three decades after Tupac was fatally shot.

For years, the case remained without a murder charge despite numerous theories about who was responsible.

Davis’ arrest in 2023 represented a major breakthrough in the investigation.

He became the first and remains the only person to face a criminal charge directly connected to Tupac’s killing.

The case has continued to attract enormous public interest because of Tupac’s enduring influence on music and popular culture.

Davis Faces Life in Prison

If convicted, Davis could face life imprisonment.

The prosecution must convince jurors beyond a reasonable doubt that Davis was legally responsible for Tupac’s murder.

The defence, meanwhile, will seek to undermine the prosecution’s evidence and establish reasonable doubt.

As the trial progresses, testimony and evidence presented in court could provide further insight into what happened on the night Tupac was shot.

Why Diddy’s Name Matters

Diddy’s appearance on the witness list has reignited interest in the long-running rivalry between Bad Boy Records and Death Row Records.

Tupac was one of Death Row’s biggest stars, while Diddy was closely associated with Bad Boy Records and the East Coast hip-hop scene.

The rivalry between the two camps became increasingly intense during the 1990s and has remained part of the broader history surrounding Tupac’s death.

Still, it is important to distinguish allegations, witness-list appearances and proven facts.

Diddy’s inclusion on the list does not establish wrongdoing.

The central issue before the court is whether Duane “Keffe D” Davis is legally responsible for Tupac Shakur’s murder.

With opening statements now underway, the highly anticipated trial could shed new light on one of hip-hop’s most infamous cases.

For background on Tupac Shakur’s career, you can naturally link his name to Rock & Roll Hall of Fame – Tupac Shakur.
