US President Donald Trump has intensified his criticism of Brazil’s presidential election, describing the result as a “disgrace” and declining to say whether he recognises Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as the country’s legitimate president following his victory over right-wing challenger Flávio Bolsonaro.

Trump made the remarks on Thursday, October 29, 2026, as political tensions continued following Brazil’s presidential runoff election. His comments came after Bolsonaro travelled to the United States and continued to challenge the outcome of the vote.

Speaking to reporters, Trump said the election had embarrassed Brazil and questioned the circumstances surrounding the result. However, he did not provide evidence establishing that the election had been manipulated.

The comments have added another international dimension to Brazil’s post-election dispute, raising questions about relations between Washington and Brasília and the political future of Bolsonaro, an ally of Trump’s political movement.

According to Reuters’ report on Trump’s criticism of Brazil’s election, the US president had already questioned the vote earlier in the week, describing it as potentially rigged without presenting evidence to support that allegation.

1. Trump Calls Brazil’s Election a Disgrace

Trump delivered his latest criticism while speaking to reporters before travelling to a campaign event in the United States.

When asked whether he accepted Lula’s victory, the US president responded by describing the Brazilian election as a disgrace and an embarrassment to the country’s people.

“I think the election was a disgrace in Brazil,” Trump said.

He added that he did not want to comment further at that moment but maintained that the election had created what he considered a deeply embarrassing situation for Brazil.

Trump also said he had watched the election without taking sides, although his public remarks have repeatedly cast doubt on the outcome.

His comments followed an earlier statement in which he described the election as appearing rigged, again without producing evidence demonstrating electoral fraud.

The criticism has drawn attention because it concerns the democratic process of another country and comes from a US president whose administration has maintained political links with the Bolsonaro family.

2. Lula Wins Brazil’s Presidential Runoff

Brazil’s electoral authorities declared incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva the winner of the October 25, 2026, presidential runoff.

Lula secured 51.79 per cent of valid votes, receiving approximately 64.26 million votes, according to Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court.

His challenger, Flávio Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, received approximately 48.21 per cent.

The result gave Lula another presidential term after a closely contested campaign that exposed deep political divisions across the country.

Lula’s victory was announced by Brazil’s electoral authorities, who also provided an assessment of voter participation and the election process.

The official results can be found on the Superior Electoral Court of Brazil’s website.

Although Bolsonaro challenged the outcome, allegations of fraud should not be treated as established facts without supporting evidence and findings from the relevant authorities.

The election result has been recognised by multiple international leaders, while Trump’s refusal to clearly acknowledge Lula’s victory has added uncertainty to the diplomatic response from Washington.

3. Flávio Bolsonaro Travels to the United States

Trump’s latest remarks came after Flávio Bolsonaro travelled to the United States following his election defeat.

Bolsonaro has continued to dispute the result and has presented himself as the rightful leader of Brazil despite the electoral authorities declaring Lula the winner.

His departure has raised questions in Brazil because it came amid legal scrutiny and a requirement to surrender his passports under a Brazilian Supreme Court order.

Reports indicated that Bolsonaro and members of his family were granted permission to enter the United States.

His decision to leave Brazil has also attracted criticism from Lula, who described the departure as shameful.

Bolsonaro’s supporters have portrayed his actions as part of a wider political struggle, while critics have questioned his refusal to accept the election result.

The situation remains politically sensitive, particularly because the Bolsonaro family has maintained links with Trump’s political circle.

However, Bolsonaro’s claims about the election do not, by themselves, establish that the vote was fraudulent.

4. Election Fraud Claims Remain Disputed

Trump’s criticism has focused partly on what he described as irregularities surrounding Brazil’s election.

He has questioned the circumstances of the vote count and pointed to developments surrounding the election as reasons for concern.

However, the US president has not publicly provided evidence demonstrating that fraud changed the result.

Brazilian electoral authorities announced Lula’s victory following the counting process and publicly addressed the election’s administration.

The country’s Superior Electoral Court reported that Lula had received 51.79 per cent of valid votes.

The dispute also concerns the extension of voting hours in some areas following transportation problems. Trump and Bolsonaro have questioned aspects of the process, but the existence of an administrative decision does not automatically demonstrate that the election was manipulated.

Any formal challenge to an election result must be assessed through the relevant legal procedures and supported by evidence.

For now, Lula remains the winner declared by Brazil’s electoral authorities, while Bolsonaro’s objections remain part of the continuing political dispute.

5. Trump’s Remarks Could Affect US-Brazil Relations

The disagreement has the potential to complicate relations between the United States and Brazil, two major countries in the Americas with significant economic and diplomatic interests.

Brazil plays an important role in international trade, agriculture, energy, environmental policy and regional diplomacy.

The relationship between Lula and Trump has already faced disagreements over trade and political issues.

Trump’s latest remarks may further increase tensions, particularly if Washington continues to question the legitimacy of Brazil’s election result without presenting evidence supporting those claims.

Brazilian officials may also face pressure to respond to statements from the US president while protecting the country’s electoral institutions and diplomatic interests.

At the same time, both countries have reasons to maintain working relations, given their economic ties and influence in international affairs.

Whether the controversy leads to a broader diplomatic dispute will depend partly on how both governments respond in the coming days.

What Happens Next?

The immediate focus remains on the political consequences of Lula’s victory and Bolsonaro’s continued challenge to the outcome.

Brazil’s electoral authorities have declared Lula the winner, while Bolsonaro has maintained that the result should be questioned.

Trump’s refusal to clearly recognise the outcome has added another complication to the situation.

The key issue is whether any formal legal challenge produces credible evidence capable of changing the result. Until then, allegations of electoral fraud remain unproven.

For Brazil, the challenge will be managing political divisions while ensuring that the transition following the election proceeds according to the country’s constitutional and legal framework.

For Washington, the controversy raises questions about how the Trump administration will approach relations with a Brazilian government led by a political figure with whom Trump has previously disagreed.

As the dispute continues, further statements from both governments and Brazil’s electoral institutions are likely to shape the next stage of the story.
