In a devastating incident that unfolded at Damgrete Hotel in Umuahia, Abia State, Emmanuel Chidiebere Onyeomereneche, an Air Force cadet, lost his life in a swimming pool accident this past Tuesday.

Sources close to the incident, speaking under anonymity, have shed light on the sequence of events leading to this heartbreaking outcome.

On the day of the tragedy, Onyeomereneche reportedly visited the hotel’s pool for a swim, seemingly unaware that the facility was undergoing renovation at the time.

Details surrounding his awareness of the pool’s condition remain unclear, raising questions about the circumstances of his plunge into the water.

Efforts to rescue Onyeomereneche were hampered by the pool’s dilapidated state, with reports indicating a lack of divers on-site to assist until the arrival of the Abia State Fire Service.

Despite their valiant efforts, the cadet’s body was only recovered from the water late in the evening, several hours after his disappearance.

The presence of his swimming trunks on the retrieved body suggested that Onyeomereneche had intended to swim, underscoring the sudden and unforeseen nature of the tragedy.

His disappearance from the pool was noted around 6:37 pm, with his body not retrieved until 9:58 pm.

Lt. Innocent Omale, the Army Public Relations Officer for the 14 Brigade, Ohafia, confirmed the incident, revealing that Onyeomereneche had been in the company of friends and had impulsively decided to jump into the pool.

The cadet’s untimely death has prompted an investigation into the precise cause and the safety measures in place at the hotel’s swimming facility.
