The British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) has retained its stand on the testament of the Chicago State University certificate of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
BBC mentioned that they are aware that the public is not pleased with their (BBC’s) stand on the issue of Tinubu’s certificate ‘forgery’ but however, there is no proof of forgery of the CSU certificate, hence their stern resolution.
In a report titled “Bola Tinubu diploma: No evidence Nigeria’s president forged college record.”
The BBC revealed that their research cleared the Nigerian president of the charge of certificate forgery.
However, many criticisms have been raised but one prominent one is that of Atiku Abubakar’s campaign for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidency in 2023.
The Atiku campaign had filed a formal complaint to the BBC management concerning the issue which was replied to by the BBC management over the weekend. The reply reads;
“Dear Audience Member. Thank you for taking time to write to us.
“We received a number of similar complaints and we regret that you are unhappy with our findings on this matter. We have looked into this and the BBC has not seen any evidence that the certificate was forged. We contacted the Chicago State University and they confirmed that Bola Tinubu graduated from the university in 1979 with a Bachelor’s degree. We believe our text piece has been informative and responsible, reporting known facts. We therefore stand by our journalism.”
From the letter, it is clear that BBC retains its stand on the legality of the certificate and expresses their regret over the public’s declination to their stand even after according to BBC, the certificates were verified by the Chicago State University.
