British rock band Squeeze cancelled its scheduled concert in Virginia after a worker was fatally crushed by a tour bus at the venue just hours before the band was due to perform.

The tragic incident occurred on Thursday, September 3, at Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia, where Squeeze had been scheduled to perform that evening.

According to U.S. Park Police, officers were called to the venue at about 5 p.m. after reports that a man had been crushed by a tour bus in a parking area. The worker was reportedly underneath the vehicle when a supporting apparatus failed, causing the bus to collapse on him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fatal accident happened only a few hours before Squeeze was scheduled to take the stage.

Following discussions between the band, venue management and the relevant authorities, the decision was made to cancel the performance.

Squeeze later expressed shock and sadness over the death, saying the incident had resulted in the loss of a life.

“After discussions with the venue and the relevant authorities, the decision was made to cancel this evening’s performance,” the band said in a statement.

The group also said it would work with the promoter and venue to explore the possibility of rescheduling the concert.

Ticket holders were told that further information would be provided once arrangements regarding the cancelled performance became clearer.

Wolf Trap responds to tragedy

Wolf Trap also confirmed that a fatal accident had occurred at the venue.

In a statement, the organisation said an accident involving a member of the community had tragically resulted in a loss of life.

The venue said the concert was cancelled out of respect for the deceased.

The decision meant that fans who had gathered for the Squeeze performance were unable to see the band as planned, but the cancellation came amid a sombre atmosphere following the fatal accident.

What happened to the worker?

According to authorities, the worker was carrying out work underneath the tour bus when the supporting equipment failed.

The vehicle subsequently came down on the worker, resulting in fatal injuries.

Officials have not publicly released the man’s identity, and further details about the investigation were not immediately available.

Reports have also noted that it was not initially clear whether the bus was directly owned or operated by Squeeze, despite the vehicle being associated with the band’s tour.

The circumstances surrounding the equipment failure are expected to be examined by authorities as part of the investigation into the accident.

Squeeze expresses condolences

The tragedy left the British band deeply affected.

Squeeze described itself as “deeply saddened and shocked” by the incident and expressed sympathy for everyone affected.

The band also indicated that its thoughts were with those impacted by the death.

The group was in the United States as part of its ongoing Tried, Tested and Trixies tour, which includes performances across North America.

The Virginia concert was scheduled to feature Squeeze alongside Adam Ant and Haircut 100.

Squeeze’s music career

Squeeze is one of Britain’s best-known rock bands, having formed in London in the 1970s.

The group is particularly known for songs including “Cool For Cats,” “Up The Junction” and “Labelled With Love.”

Fronted by songwriters Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford, Squeeze has experienced numerous lineup changes throughout its long career while continuing to record and perform.

The band’s 16th studio album, Trixies, was released in March 2026.

The current tour represents another chapter in the band’s decades-long career, making the sudden cancellation in Virginia particularly difficult for the group and its fans.

Tour continues after Virginia tragedy

Despite the cancellation, Squeeze’s US tour was scheduled to continue with another performance in Ohio on Friday, September 4.

The band has also been scheduled to perform at additional venues across the United States during September before returning to the United Kingdom later in the year.

For fans who had travelled to Wolf Trap for Thursday’s show, however, the evening became one of shock and sadness rather than music.

The fatal accident has overshadowed what was expected to be a celebratory night of live music.

As authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the worker’s death, Squeeze and Wolf Trap have offered their condolences to those affected.

The band has also promised to communicate further information to ticket holders regarding any possible rescheduled performance.

For now, the priority remains the tragic loss of the unidentified worker, whose death led to the cancellation of the highly anticipated Virginia concert.
