Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is mourning the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan, who died on Monday, September 7, while receiving treatment at a hospital in Zanzibar.

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, Tanzania’s First Gentleman, died at 8:00 a.m. local time at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, according to Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who announced his death.

Ndejembi said the late First Gentleman had been receiving treatment for a heart condition before his death.

“It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of Mr Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan,” the vice president said in announcing the news.

He extended condolences to President Samia, her family, relatives, friends and the people of Tanzania.

The death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan has prompted condolences from across East Africa and beyond.

Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his sorrow over the loss, describing Ameir as a lifelong companion to President Samia, a beloved father and a distinguished Tanzanian.

“President Samia has lost a lifelong companion, her children a beloved father, and Tanzania a distinguished son,” Ruto wrote in his condolence message.

Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye also sent condolences to President Samia and the people of Tanzania following the death.

Other regional leaders have similarly expressed sympathy to Tanzania’s First Family during the period of mourning.

Who was Hafidh Ameir Hassan?

Hafidh Ameir Hassan was an agricultural academic and agriculturalist who largely stayed away from the political spotlight despite his wife’s rise to the highest office in Tanzania.

He became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman in March 2021 after Samia Suluhu Hassan assumed the presidency following the death of President John Magufuli.

Unlike many spouses of prominent political leaders, Ameir maintained a relatively private life and rarely appeared alongside President Samia at major public events.

His professional background was largely centred on agriculture and academia rather than politics.

A marriage spanning nearly five decades

Hafidh Ameir Hassan married Samia Suluhu Hassan in 1978, long before she became Tanzania’s president.

The couple remained married for nearly five decades and had four children together — three sons and a daughter.

Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, followed her mother’s path into public service and serves in Zanzibar’s House of Representatives.

The family largely maintained a private life despite President Samia’s increasing prominence in Tanzanian politics.

Tanzania’s historic First Gentleman

When Samia became president in 2021, following the death of John Magufuli, she made history as Tanzania’s first female president.

Her election to the presidency also gave her husband a unique place in the country’s political history.

Hafidh became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman, although the position is largely ceremonial and informal.

He generally avoided the political spotlight and maintained his focus away from his wife’s public career.

Funeral arrangements underway

Following the announcement of his death, Vice President Ndejembi said funeral arrangements were already underway in Kizimkazi, a village in Zanzibar associated with the First Gentleman’s family.

Further details about the funeral and burial arrangements are expected to be announced by the Tanzanian authorities and the family.

The news has cast a period of mourning over Tanzania as citizens, political leaders and neighbouring countries extend their condolences to President Samia and her family.

For President Samia, the loss marks the death of a lifelong partner who stood beside her long before she entered the highest levels of political leadership.

For Tanzania, Hafidh Ameir Hassan will also be remembered as the country’s first First Gentleman — a historic role he occupied quietly while supporting his wife from largely outside the public eye.

As funeral preparations continue in Zanzibar, tributes are expected to grow for a man who remained relatively private but held a unique place in Tanzania’s modern political history.
