The Government of Mexico has approved former presidential aide Reno Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador, bringing months of uncertainty surrounding his diplomatic posting to an end.
Omokri announced the development in a post on his X account on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. According to reports by TheCable and Premium Times, the approval was formally communicated through Mexico’s diplomatic mission in Abuja.
The development clears a major hurdle in Omokri’s appointment as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico. He will also have concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, meaning his diplomatic responsibilities will extend to four countries.

Mexico Grants Formal Diplomatic Approval
In his announcement, Omokri said José Manuel Briseño Flores, Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Mexico in Abuja, delivered the diplomatic approval to Ambassador Babagana Wakil, Director of Protocol at Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The approval is known as agrément, a standard diplomatic procedure in which a receiving country formally consents to the appointment of an ambassador nominated by another government.
Obtaining agrément is an essential step in the appointment process. Without it, a nominee cannot complete the normal process of taking up the ambassadorial position in the host country.
Omokri expressed gratitude for Mexico’s decision, describing the approval as a significant development in his diplomatic journey.
The announcement follows several months of waiting after Nigeria had already approved his posting to Mexico City.
How Tinubu Nominated Omokri
President Bola Tinubu nominated Omokri for an ambassadorial position in November 2025, alongside dozens of other nominees.
Those nominated included former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode and former Independent National Electoral Commission chairman Mahmood Yakubu.
The Senate subsequently confirmed the ambassadorial nominees in December 2025, completing another major stage of the appointment process.
In March 2026, Tinubu approved the posting of 65 ambassadors-designate and high commissioners to various countries. Omokri was assigned to Mexico City.
However, the approval of Nigeria’s government and the Senate did not automatically allow him to begin his diplomatic assignment. Mexico still had to grant its formal consent before the posting could proceed.
Why Omokri’s Posting Was Delayed
The delay became a subject of public discussion as other ambassador-designates progressed with their assignments.
In August 2026, Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that Mexico and Japan had yet to communicate formal acceptance of two outstanding ambassadorial appointments.
The ministry said it was engaging the countries concerned to obtain the necessary approvals.
Mexico’s decision now resolves the outstanding diplomatic clearance for Omokri’s appointment.
The delay concerned the formal acceptance required from the host country; it did not mean that the Nigerian Senate had failed to confirm Omokri’s nomination.
Omokri to Represent Nigeria in Four Countries
With the agrément granted, Omokri’s appointment covers Mexico as well as concurrent accreditation to Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
Concurrent accreditation allows one ambassador to represent their country in more than one foreign state, even when the diplomat’s principal posting is based in a single country.
The arrangement means Omokri’s diplomatic responsibilities will not be limited to Mexico alone. His role will also involve representing Nigeria in its relations with the three Central American countries.
The full implementation of his posting will follow the applicable diplomatic procedures.
What Happens Next?
Mexico’s approval marks an important milestone, but agrément is one part of the broader diplomatic accreditation process. Ambassadors typically complete the remaining formalities, including presenting their credentials to the receiving country’s head of state, before fully assuming their duties.
Omokri’s appointment comes as Nigeria continues to deploy ambassadors and high commissioners to its foreign missions following the nomination and confirmation process that began in 2025.
For now, the central development is that Mexico has formally accepted Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador-designate, ending the outstanding approval delay reported earlier in the year.
The appointment will place him at the centre of Nigeria’s diplomatic representation in Mexico, with additional responsibilities for relations with Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.
