The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, declared Monday, March 11, 2024, as the first day of Ramadan, marking the beginning of the holy month for Muslims. As the spiritual leader of Muslims in Nigeria, the Sultan based this declaration on the moon sighting in various parts of the country on Sunday, the 29th day of the Month of Shaban.
The Sultan received information from Muslim leaders nationwide and accepted the moon sighting as the basis for starting Ramadan. He urged the entire Muslim community to commence fasting in alignment with Islamic teachings. Additionally, the Sultan encouraged Muslims to use the month of Ramadan to pray for an end to insecurity in the country and for leaders to discharge their duties with the fear of God.
He emphasized the importance of observing the fast with a deep sense of reverence for God, urging the affluent to assist the less privileged with food during the Holy month.
In a related development, Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, extended congratulations to the Muslim Ummah on the commencement of Ramadan 1445. The governor recognized the significance of this blessed month and called on Muslims to intensify their prayers for the country and the state.
Governor Makinde acknowledged the economic challenges facing the nation and emphasized the need for increased prayers to complement ongoing efforts by leaders. He reassured the people of his administration’s commitment to alleviating economic hardships.
Similarly, former governorship aspirant Dotun Babayemi encouraged the Muslim faithful to use the Ramadan month as a time for fervent prayer for the country. He stressed the collective responsibility of Nigerians to contribute positively to the nation’s success through persistent efforts and consistent supplications to God during this fasting period.
