Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Qing Madi has sparked a major controversy in the music industry after publicly accusing her former record label boss, Joy Tongo, of financial misconduct, forgery, and attempts to sabotage her career.
The singer made the allegations during a recent TikTok livestream, where she opened up about an ongoing dispute with her former label, JTon Music. According to Qing Madi, the conflict has escalated beyond contractual disagreements and has now become a battle, she says, that is affecting her music career and emotional well-being.
The controversy erupted after several songs from her recently released project, Barely Legal, were reportedly removed from streaming platforms over an alleged contractual dispute.
Addressing fans during the livestream, Qing Madi expressed frustration over the situation and accused her former label of repeatedly interfering with her career despite previous legal proceedings between both parties.
According to the singer, her former label has continued to challenge her music releases through legal actions and takedown requests.

“She stole from me, did a bunch of weird things like forging my signature,” Qing Madi alleged during the livestream.
The singer further claimed that her former record label filed a $2 million lawsuit against her but was unsuccessful in court. She argued that despite the legal setback, the label has continued making efforts to disrupt her progress.
“She sued me for $2 million and she lost the case. She took down ‘Pepper Me’. I worked with my team to prove it was an illegal takedown. They went through the corners again to take down the project,” she said.
The allegations quickly gained traction online, with fans and industry observers weighing in on the dispute. Many supporters expressed concern over the claims and called for transparency from all parties involved.
Qing Madi also appealed to her fans for support, stating that the prolonged conflict was becoming exhausting.
The singer explained that she felt overwhelmed by the ongoing legal and professional battles, adding that she hoped public attention would help shed light on what she described as unfair treatment.
Her comments triggered widespread reactions across social media platforms, where many users debated artist-label relationships and the challenges young musicians often face while navigating the music industry.
However, Joy Tongo has strongly denied all allegations leveled against her.
Responding through a statement shared on Instagram, the JTon Music CEO described Qing Madi’s claims as false and misleading.
Tongo specifically rejected the accusations of forgery and theft, insisting that she had not engaged in any wrongdoing.
According to her, the legal dispute between both parties has not been concluded and remains active.
She challenged Qing Madi’s claim that she had won the case, stating that the matter had not yet proceeded to trial.
Tongo further explained that an existing court injunction was the basis for the record label’s ability to issue legal takedown notices concerning songs and projects connected to the dispute.
“Also, the injunction ruling is why we can issue a legal takedown now. What case have you won? Because last time I checked, the case still hasn’t gone to trial,” she wrote.
The conflicting statements have left fans searching for clarity regarding the true state of the legal battle.
As both parties continue to publicly defend their positions, many industry observers believe the dispute highlights the importance of clear contracts, transparency, and proper legal representation within the music business.
Artist-label disagreements are not uncommon in the entertainment industry. Over the years, several musicians around the world have found themselves involved in legal disputes concerning contracts, royalties, ownership rights, and creative control.
Such disagreements often become highly publicized, especially when successful artists seek greater independence or challenge existing contractual arrangements.
For Qing Madi, the controversy comes at a time when her career continues to gain momentum.
The singer has built a strong following through songs such as American Love and has been widely recognized as one of the promising voices in Nigeria’s rapidly growing Afrobeats scene.
Many fans have praised her talent, songwriting ability, and unique sound, making the ongoing dispute particularly concerning for supporters who fear it could impact her artistic growth.
Despite the public exchange of accusations, the legal issues surrounding the case remain unresolved.
Until a court reaches a final decision or both parties agree to a settlement, questions surrounding the allegations and contractual disagreements are likely to persist.
