Billionaire media mogul Oprah Winfrey has surprised fans by revealing that the name she has been known by around the world for decades is not actually the name she was given at birth.

The 72-year-old television icon made the revelation during an appearance on Keke Palmer’s podcast, Baby, This Is Keke Palmer, where she opened up about the unusual story behind her birth name and how a simple pronunciation mistake changed her identity forever.

1. Oprah’s real name is actually Orpah

During the podcast conversation, Winfrey disclosed that her birth certificate lists her name as Orpah, not Oprah.

She explained that the name comes directly from the Bible and was chosen by her family when she was born.

However, because many people struggled to pronounce and spell “Orpah,” they gradually began calling her “Oprah” instead.

That small change eventually became permanent and remains the name the world knows today.

2. The mistake happened when she was a child

Winfrey explained that the change wasn’t something she intentionally decided.

Instead, it happened naturally while she was still very young.

“It was Orpah from the Bible,” she said.

According to the media legend, people simply found it easier to say “Oprah” than “Orpah.”

Eventually, everyone—including friends, teachers and people around her—began using the new pronunciation until it completely replaced her original name.

3. She only discovered the truth years later

One of the biggest surprises from the interview was that Oprah didn’t realise the difference until she was about 20 years old.

By then, she had already spent years being known publicly as Oprah.

She explained that it was only later that she realised her birth certificate carried a different spelling.

Despite discovering the discrepancy, she decided to keep using Oprah because it had already become her identity.

4. Her name has Biblical origins

Oprah also explained the religious background behind her birth name.

She revealed that Orpah appears in the Book of Ruth in the Bible.

The story centres on Naomi and her daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah.

While Ruth famously chose to remain with Naomi—leading to the well-known verse, “Where you go, I will go”—Orpah decided to return to her own people.

Although the Biblical character is less widely known than Ruth, the name carries historical and religious significance.

5. Keke Palmer shares a similar experience

During the discussion, Oprah pointed out that podcast host Keke Palmer also has a different legal name.

Palmer’s birth name is Lauren Keyana Palmer, something many fans are unaware of.

Keke laughed after Oprah mentioned it, expressing surprise that Winfrey knew her official name.

The exchange highlighted how many entertainers become globally recognised by names that differ from those on their birth certificates.

6. Oprah’s name has become one of the world’s strongest brands

Although the change happened accidentally, “Oprah” has become one of the most recognisable names in entertainment history.

Over the decades, Winfrey has built an extraordinary career as a television host, actress, producer, entrepreneur and philanthropist.

Her talk show, The Oprah Winfrey Show, became one of the most successful television programmes ever produced, running for 25 years and reaching millions of viewers worldwide.

Today, the Oprah brand extends to television networks, magazines, podcasts, books, charitable organisations and business investments.

7. Fans were stunned by the revelation

Following the interview, social media users expressed disbelief after learning the story behind Oprah’s name.

Many admitted they had assumed Oprah was her legal name throughout her life.

Others praised the media icon for sharing such a personal detail decades into her career.

Some fans also noted that the accidental name change ultimately created one of the most iconic names in modern media history.

From Orpah to Oprah: A remarkable journey

While the spelling may have changed, Oprah Winfrey’s influence remains unchanged.

Born into humble beginnings in Mississippi, she overcame poverty, discrimination and personal hardship before becoming one of the world’s most influential women.

Her journey from local television presenter to billionaire entrepreneur has inspired millions across the globe.

Today, Oprah is recognised not only for her success in media but also for her philanthropy, educational initiatives and advocacy for women’s empowerment.

Ironically, the name that began as a simple childhood mispronunciation has become one of the most powerful personal brands in the world.

For Oprah, what started as an innocent mistake eventually became part of her remarkable story—one that continues to inspire generations.
