Veteran Nollywood actor Nkem Owoh, popularly known as Osuofia, has revealed that his successful acting career happened by accident and was never part of his original plan.
The beloved comic actor recently opened up about his journey in the entertainment industry, sharing how he was pressured by colleagues to step in front of the camera despite initially preferring to work behind the scenes as a scriptwriter.
Speaking during an interview on the Selah Meditate podcast, Nken Owoh explained that acting was not his first career choice. According to him, he was comfortable writing scripts and contributing creatively behind the camera before others convinced him to explore acting.

Reflecting on the beginning of his entertainment journey, Nkem Owoh recalled how his natural ability to make people laugh caught the attention of colleagues and television executives.
According to the actor, Nkem Owoh people around him noticed that he constantly entertained others behind the scenes and believed his talent deserved a larger audience.
He explained that despite his reluctance, the pressure from colleagues eventually pushed him to appear on television.
“My coming in front of the camera was an accident. I was a scriptwriter behind the scenes and people started telling me to start performing in front of the camera,” he said.
The veteran actor, Nkem Owoh, further revealed that his breakthrough opportunity came when the former Anambra Television Authority (ATV) created a special comedy segment for him.
The programme reportedly gave him seven minutes to showcase his comedy skills and connect directly with viewers.
Initially unsure about the transition, Nkem Owoh eventually embraced the opportunity and quickly realized that audiences appreciated his unique style of humor.
“I remember ATV created a seven-minute programme for me to do stand-up comedy in the 80s. They told me to come in front of the camera because I was making people laugh behind the camera,” he recalled.
The actor noted that the positive response from viewers encouraged him to continue performing.
As people embraced his comedy and acting style, he discovered a new passion that would eventually transform his life and career.
That decision marked the beginning of what would become one of the most successful careers in the Nigerian film industry.

“A lot of people want to be celebrities. They only know the benefits but not the downsides. When you become famous, you can’t do a lot of the things you were doing freely before. You become restricted in a lot of ways,” he added.
