A devastating flash flood triggered by an avalanche of ice and rock has struck parts of Nepal near the Tibet border, leaving at least eight people dead and hundreds of others missing.

The disaster occurred on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, after a huge volume of ice, rock and debris entered the Bhotekoshi River, causing the river to rise rapidly and send floodwaters through surrounding communities.

Officials said 384 people were reported missing, including 291 foreign tourists from countries such as India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Malaysia.

Avalanche triggers massive flash floods

The Bhotekoshi River reportedly flooded at around 9 a.m. local time on Wednesday.

The sudden surge of water caused widespread destruction, damaging villages, roads, buildings and hydropower infrastructure.

Several areas were covered by enormous quantities of mud and debris as floodwaters swept through communities.

Nuwakot district was among the worst-affected areas, with officials reporting that multi-storey buildings, trucks and vans were buried under mud.

The destruction has made access to some locations difficult, increasing concerns about people who may remain trapped or isolated.

Authorities have also warned residents in several districts to stay away from the banks of major rivers, including the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli and Narayani.

Hundreds of tourists reported missing

The disaster has raised particular concern because hundreds of tourists were reportedly in the affected region.

Officials said 384 people were listed as missing, with 291 believed to be foreign nationals.

Many of those missing are reportedly tourists travelling in connection with pilgrimages to Mount Kailash in Tibet.

Mount Kailash is considered a sacred site by Hindus and attracts pilgrims from India and other parts of the world.

Nepal tourism officials said many of the missing people were likely Indian tourists or members of the Indian diaspora travelling through the region.

The uncertainty surrounding their whereabouts has increased pressure on authorities to accelerate search and rescue operations.

Foreign nationals among those missing

Several governments have begun monitoring the situation and trying to establish the whereabouts of their citizens.

South Korean officials said some South Korean nationals working on the construction of a hydropower project in Nepal were among those reported missing.

Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry also said its embassy in Kathmandu had received information from travel agencies about 11 Malaysians believed to be in the Rasuwa district.

Officials said contact had reportedly been lost with the Malaysian travellers following the disaster.

The situation remains fluid, and authorities are expected to continue updating the number of missing people as rescue teams gain access to affected areas.

Nepal seeks help from India and China

The scale of the disaster has led Nepal to request assistance from neighbouring countries.

Sasmit Pokharel, a spokesperson for the Nepali government, said authorities had asked both India and China to support the rescue operation.

The involvement of neighbouring countries could provide additional resources, equipment and specialist personnel at a time when Nepal is dealing with widespread damage.

Rescue operations are expected to be challenging because roads and bridges have been damaged in several locations.

The amount of mud and debris left behind by the floods could also make it difficult for emergency teams to reach isolated communities.

Warnings issued along major rivers

Following the flooding, authorities issued warnings to residents in several districts.

People living close to the Bhotekoshi, Trishuli and Narayani rivers were urged to move away from the riverbanks and avoid areas where water levels could rise suddenly.

The warnings reflect concerns that additional flooding could occur as water continues to move through the river systems.

Residents have also been urged to follow instructions from emergency officials and avoid travelling through areas affected by landslides, damaged roads and floodwaters.

A devastating blow to local communities

Beyond the reported deaths and missing tourists, the disaster has caused significant damage to homes, businesses and critical infrastructure.

Villages near the Bhotekoshi River were among those affected, while hydropower facilities and transportation routes also suffered damage.

For communities that depend on roads and bridges to access nearby towns, the destruction could create further difficulties in the aftermath of the disaster.

The full economic impact is not yet known, and authorities are expected to assess the damage once emergency rescue operations have progressed.

Search and rescue efforts continue

Emergency workers are continuing efforts to locate missing people and assess the extent of the destruction.

With hundreds still unaccounted for, authorities face an urgent race against time to reach areas covered by mud and debris.

The number of casualties could change as rescue teams gain access to previously unreachable locations.

The disaster has also highlighted the dangers faced by communities and travellers in mountainous regions, where avalanches, landslides and sudden floods can develop rapidly.

For now, the priority remains finding those who are missing, treating survivors and helping affected communities recover.

As Nepal coordinates rescue efforts with international partners, families across several countries are anxiously awaiting news about relatives and loved ones who remain unaccounted for.
