A missing Ohio teenager has been found alive after spending 263 days at the Springfield home of a former teacher, bringing an end to a months-long search that had left her family desperate for answers.

The girl, who was 16 when she disappeared, was found on August 21, 2026, inside the home of Jobe Binkley, a 48-year-old former science teacher with the Springfield City School District.

According to court documents and reports from PEOPLE and local media, Binkley has been charged with one count of interference with custody, a first-degree misdemeanor. He has pleaded not guilty and was released on bond. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 30.

The teenager was reported missing after she left a transitional living facility in Columbus on December 2, 2025.

Her disappearance triggered a lengthy search involving her family and law-enforcement agencies.

According to reports, relatives repeatedly raised concerns that the teenager could be staying at Binkley’s home in Springfield.

Family members say they provided information to police about the possibility that she was at the former teacher’s residence, including photographs that they believed showed her inside the property.

Despite those concerns, authorities did not locate her there until August 21.

US Marshals task force finds teenager

The breakthrough came when an officer working with the U.S. Marshals Service went to Binkley’s home as part of the search for the missing girl.

According to a probable-cause affidavit cited by PEOPLE, Binkley allegedly acknowledged that the teenager was inside the residence and called for her to come out.

Authorities had reportedly visited the property twice previously while searching for the girl.

On those occasions, investigators allege that Binkley refused to allow officers into the house and told them the teenager was not there, despite having been informed that she was an active missing person.

The teenager was ultimately found alive and has been located safely.

Family raises grooming allegations

The discovery has raised additional questions about the relationship between Binkley and the teenager.

Chelsi Warner, the mother of the girl’s half-sister, told the New York Post that she believes Binkley groomed the teenager and took advantage of her difficult family circumstances.

Warner claimed that Binkley had become a parental figure to the teenager and that the girl had previously gone to his home after running away.

However, these claims remain allegations and have not been established in court.

Authorities have not publicly confirmed that Binkley sexually abused the teenager or that grooming occurred.

The criminal charge currently reported against him relates to interference with custody.

Former teacher had previously faced scrutiny

Binkley’s history with the Springfield City School District has also come under renewed attention.

According to records cited by local media, he was placed on administrative leave in November 2024 after concerns were raised about his professional interactions with students.

The district said those allegations were later determined to be unsubstantiated.

Binkley was placed on administrative leave again in January 2025 and was dismissed the following month for violating the district’s technology-use policy.

Springfield City Schools has said it was not aware of allegations involving the missing teenager until after Binkley was no longer employed by the district.

Questions remain over the 263-day disappearance

The discovery has also raised questions about how the teenager remained inside the property for so long without being located.

Family members say they repeatedly directed authorities toward Binkley’s home.

A neighbor also told local media that rumors had circulated that the missing teenager could be staying at the residence, although she said she never personally saw the girl outside the property.

The case is now expected to focus on how the teenager came to stay at the home, how long she remained there and whether anyone else may have known about her whereabouts.

Investigators will also determine whether additional charges are appropriate based on the evidence.

Binkley pleads not guilty

Binkley has pleaded not guilty to the interference-with-custody charge and remains entitled to the presumption of innocence.

The current charge alleges that he knowingly kept or harbored a child who had been reported missing.

His next reported court proceeding is scheduled for September 30.

Authorities have not publicly established the broader allegations made by members of the teenager’s family, and the investigation remains ongoing.

For the teenager’s family, however, the most important development is that their long search has ended with her being found alive.

The circumstances surrounding the 263-day disappearance are now likely to receive further scrutiny as the criminal case moves through court.
