R&B singer Miguel has spoken out in a powerful statement about the racism, harassment and threats he says he and his family have faced over the past year, including alleged anti-Asian attacks directed at his partner, Margaret Zhang.

The singer addressed the issue on social media, saying that his family has been subjected to behaviour that goes far beyond ordinary criticism of a public figure.

According to Miguel, Zhang has faced racist and anti-Asian attacks, while abusive comments and other forms of harassment have also been directed at their child.

Miguel condemns racist attacks against his family

In his statement, Miguel made it clear that he does not consider racism, threats or harassment to be legitimate forms of criticism.

“Racism, threats, harassment, stalking, invasions of privacy, and targeting of children are abuse, not opinion,” he wrote.

The singer’s message highlighted the seriousness of the alleged behaviour and drew a clear distinction between criticism directed at celebrities and attacks that involve their partners or children.

Miguel acknowledged that public figures are often exposed to criticism because of their careers and public profiles.

However, he argued that this does not give people the right to threaten, stalk, harass or target members of their families.

Margaret Zhang targeted by anti-Asian abuse

Miguel specifically said his partner, Margaret Zhang, has been subjected to racist and anti-Asian attacks.

The allegations have added to wider concerns about racism and online harassment faced by people in interracial relationships and families.

Social media platforms have created opportunities for celebrities to connect directly with millions of followers, but the same platforms can also expose public figures and their relatives to abusive comments and unwanted attention.

Miguel’s statement suggests that his family has experienced what he considers a sustained pattern of unacceptable behaviour.

He did not provide every detail of the alleged incidents in his statement, but he indicated that the situation has been serious enough to require legal intervention.

Singer says legal action is being taken

Miguel also revealed that legal action has already been taken in connection with the alleged harassment.

He said legal measures have been and will continue to be pursued where necessary.

The singer’s warning signals that he intends to protect his family from further harassment and believes certain actions have crossed the boundary between online commentary and potentially unlawful conduct.

His statement also serves as a warning to people who may believe that social media provides complete anonymity or protection from consequences.

Online threats, stalking and targeted harassment can have serious consequences for victims, particularly when children are involved.

Miguel and Margaret Zhang’s growing family

Miguel and Margaret Zhang welcomed their son, Angel, in 2024.

The couple are now expecting their second child, making the singer’s decision to speak publicly about the alleged attacks particularly significant.

The arrival of their first child marked a new chapter in their relationship, while the upcoming birth means the family is preparing to welcome another member.

Miguel’s comments indicate that protecting his children from online abuse is now one of his major concerns.

His statement specifically condemned the targeting of children, emphasising that young family members should not become subjects of online attacks because of their parents’ public profiles.

Public criticism versus abuse

Celebrities routinely face criticism over their music, relationships, opinions and public appearances.

However, Miguel’s comments highlight an important distinction between criticism and abusive conduct.

Expressing disagreement with a celebrity is different from making threats, stalking someone, invading their privacy or directing racist abuse at their family.

The singer’s statement suggests that while he understands the realities of being famous, he does not accept attacks against people who did not choose the same level of public exposure.

His position has resonated with broader discussions about how social media users interact with celebrities and their families.

Growing concern over online harassment

Miguel’s experience also reflects a wider problem affecting public figures and ordinary social media users alike.

Harassment can take many forms, including abusive messages, threats, stalking, attempts to expose private information and targeted attacks based on race or ethnicity.

When children become targets, the potential impact can be particularly distressing for families.

Miguel’s decision to speak out may therefore draw further attention to the responsibility of social media users to recognise the consequences of their actions.

For now, the singer and his family are preparing for the arrival of their second child while dealing with the alleged harassment.

Miguel has made his position clear: criticism may come with public life, but racism, threats, stalking, privacy violations and attacks against children are unacceptable.
