A senior figure in one of Mexico’s most feared criminal organisations has been arrested over the shocking murder of TikTok influencer Valeria Marquez, whose killing during a live broadcast stunned millions around the world.

Authorities announced the arrest of Ramón Ángel Álvarez Ayala, a high-ranking member of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), accusing him of orchestrating the brutal assassination after Valeria reportedly ended her relationship with his son.

The case, which attracted global attention because the killing was streamed live on social media, has become one of Mexico’s most disturbing crimes involving an online personality.
According to Mexican authorities, Álvarez Ayala was captured by elite security forces during a coordinated operation in downtown Atotonilco el Alto, Jalisco, ending months of investigations into several violent crimes linked to the cartel leader.
Officials also revealed that the suspected drug lord was already wanted in connection with the assassination of Carlos Manzo, the mayor of Uruapan, who was killed during the Day of the Dead celebrations in November 2025.
Influencer was killed during livestream
Valeria Marquez, a 23-year-old fashion and beauty influencer, was murdered inside her beauty salon in Jalisco in May 2025 while interacting with thousands of followers during a TikTok livestream.
The horrifying attack unfolded in real time after an armed man entered the salon and reportedly asked whether she was Valeria before opening fire.
Moments later, the Valeria collapsed onto a table after suffering gunshot wounds to the chest and head as horrified viewers watched the tragedy unfold.
The livestream only ended after another woman rushed into the room and switched off the camera.
The shocking footage quickly spread across social media, triggering widespread outrage and renewed concerns over cartel violence targeting civilians and public figures in Mexico.
Breakup allegedly triggered murder plot
Mexico’s Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, alleged that the killing was ordered after Álvarez Ayala received a phone call from his son, Francisco Álvarez, who had previously dated Marquez.
Investigators claim the relationship had ended before the murder and that the breakup allegedly sparked the deadly retaliation.
According to Harfuch, the suspect had previously threatened the influencer on multiple occasions before the fatal attack.
“He had threatened her on several occasions, and everything indicates, and this will be proven, that the son asked his father, R-1, to carry out the femicide,” Harfuch said.
Authorities believe the evidence gathered so far strongly points to the cartel leader’s involvement in planning the assassination.

Gunman still on the run
Despite the major breakthrough with the arrest of Álvarez Ayala, investigators say the gunman who carried out the attack remains at large.
Police have also not arrested Francisco Álvarez, who is alleged to have requested the killing.
Authorities continue to search for those directly involved in the execution of the crime while expanding investigations into the cartel’s activities.
The arrest of the alleged mastermind is expected to provide investigators with valuable information about the criminal network behind the killing.
Final social media post
Just hours before her death, Valeria Marquez shared a smiling selfie from inside her beauty salon on Instagram.
The image has since become one of the final public moments of the influencer’s life, with thousands of followers continuing to leave messages of remembrance beneath her social media posts.
Valeria murder sent shockwaves through the influencer community, with many creators calling for greater protection for women and public figures facing online threats and harassment.
Cartel violence remains a major challenge
The Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) is regarded as one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent criminal organisations.
The cartel has been linked to kidnappings, assassinations, extortion, drug trafficking and attacks on government officials across several regions of the country.
Security experts say the organisation has continued expanding its influence despite ongoing military operations aimed at dismantling its leadership.
The arrest of Álvarez Ayala is being viewed as a significant victory for Mexican authorities, although analysts warn that cartel operations are unlikely to stop with the capture of a single leader.
Investigation continues
Prosecutors are expected to continue gathering evidence to support charges against the suspects as investigations remain ongoing.
Authorities believe additional arrests could follow as more information emerges about those involved in planning and carrying out the killing.
The case has also reignited discussions about violence against women in Mexico, particularly high-profile femicide cases that continue to draw international attention.
As the legal process moves forward, many of Valeria Marquez’s supporters hope those responsible will eventually be brought to justice.
For now, the arrest of the alleged cartel leader represents the biggest development in a case that horrified millions and highlighted the deadly intersection of organised crime, social media fame and personal relationships.
