France captain Kylian Mbappe has publicly accused a Paraguayan senator of racism following a series of inflammatory social media comments made after France knocked Paraguay out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The controversy erupted after France secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Paraguay in the Round of 16 in Philadelphia, with Mbappe scoring the decisive second-half penalty that sent Didier Deschamps’ side into the quarter-finals.

While the result was enough to keep France’s World Cup hopes alive, attention quickly shifted away from the football and onto a heated exchange that has sparked international debate.

According to reports, the match itself was fiercely contested, with Paraguay adopting a physical style of play throughout the encounter. French players were repeatedly fouled as Paraguay attempted to disrupt their rhythm, while several incidents of gamesmanship added to the tension on the pitch.

The drama did not end at the final whistle.

Following the match, Mbappe reportedly declined to shake hands with Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill, a moment that quickly became a talking point across social media.

Shortly afterward, Paraguayan senator Celeste Amarilla launched a series of controversial posts directed at the French captain.

In one post, she reportedly wrote that Mbappe “hasn’t even learned to write” before making remarks widely condemned as racist.

She also praised goalkeeper Orlando Gill for not reacting physically to Mbappe after the game, writing that she would have responded differently.

The senator continued her criticism in another post, describing the Real Madrid forward as someone “pretending hard to be French,” while also calling him arrogant and claiming France only defeated Paraguay through luck.

Her comments immediately attracted criticism online, with many users accusing her of promoting racism and disrespecting one of world football’s biggest stars.

Mbappe did not remain silent.

The France captain responded with a strongly worded statement condemning the senator’s remarks.

Addressing Amarilla directly, Mbappe said she was “unworthy” of her public office and insisted she did not represent the values of Paraguay or its people.

He praised the Paraguayan players for their commitment and determination throughout the tournament while distancing them from the senator’s comments.

Mbappe also accused Amarilla of damaging Paraguay’s international reputation.

“Through your recklessness and your brazen racism, the entire world has already forgotten the journey and the historic effort that your players accomplished during this World Cup,” he wrote.

He concluded by declaring that he would never accept people spreading hatred and racism.

The controversy quickly drew the attention of the French Football Federation (FFF).

FFF president Philippe Diallo issued a statement expressing full support for Mbappe and condemned the senator’s comments in the strongest possible terms.

Diallo described the remarks as “criminal and reprehensible,” adding that racism has no place in football or society.

He also confirmed that the federation intends to pursue legal action by filing a report with prosecutors.

“The racist remarks targeting Kylian Mbappe are unacceptable,” Diallo stated.

“I offer my full support to our captain, to the players, and more generally to all victims of such hateful remarks.”

He further stressed that insults directed at members of the French national team are also insults directed at France itself.

The incident has generated widespread discussion across social media platforms, with football fans, anti-racism groups and sports commentators condemning the language used against Mbappe.

Many supporters praised the French captain for speaking out publicly against racism, saying high-profile athletes have an important role in challenging discrimination whenever it occurs.

Others also expressed sympathy for Paraguay’s national team, arguing that the players’ impressive World Cup campaign should not be overshadowed by political controversy.

Despite the off-field dispute, France’s attention now turns to the quarter-finals as they continue their pursuit of another World Cup title.

Mbappe has once again proven decisive for Les Bleus, scoring the winning goal in a tense knockout encounter and reinforcing his reputation as one of the world’s elite footballers.

The Real Madrid forward has been one of France’s standout performers throughout the tournament and remains central to their ambitions of lifting the trophy.

Meanwhile, the controversy surrounding Senator Amarilla’s comments is expected to continue as legal proceedings and international reactions develop.

The incident serves as another reminder that football’s global platform brings with it responsibility, and that discriminatory language continues to face growing opposition from players, governing bodies and supporters alike.
