Police in Malaysia are investigating a 16-year-old student after a female teacher was injured during an alleged classroom attack at Tunku Putra-HELP International School in Kuching, Sarawak.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at around 8am, prompting a police investigation and a review of school security measures. The teenager was detained and later released on police bail, according to Malaysia’s national news agency, Bernama.
The case attracted widespread attention after footage purportedly showing the incident circulated on social media. Reports said the student allegedly livestreamed events using a mobile phone attached to his forehead.
However, authorities have urged the public not to speculate while investigators establish exactly what happened.

1. Teacher Injured During Classroom Incident
According to Sarawak acting police commissioner Saifullizan Ishak, police received an emergency report at approximately 8.03 am about a student allegedly bringing firecrackers to the school and injuring a female teacher.
The teacher reportedly suffered a cut to her hand and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The school said its staff responded to the incident and that students in the affected classroom were evacuated. No other injuries were reported in the school’s statement.
In an update published by The Star, the school said the teacher was recovering well and had not sustained critical injuries.
The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation.
2. Footage Purportedly Shows the Incident
Videos circulated online appeared to show the teenager preparing in a restroom before moving towards a classroom. CCTV footage reportedly showed him approaching the teacher, who attempted to intervene.
Other footage was said to have been recorded from a phone attached to the student’s head.
The videos prompted questions about how the incident unfolded and whether it was broadcast live. Malaysian media reported that police confirmed the student had livestreamed the incident.
Authorities have not publicly established a motive for the alleged attack.
Police have also cautioned the public against circulating unverified information, a warning that is particularly relevant when footage involves a minor and people who may have experienced a traumatic event.
3. Reports Differ Over the Weapon
Initial reports described the incident as an alleged axe attack after footage appeared to show an axe.
However, subsequent reporting introduced an important qualification. DayakDaily reported that police later clarified that the weapon involved was a penknife, not an axe.
Bernama also reported that a penknife and a small axe were found, while the precise role of each item in the incident was not established in the initial reports.
The distinction matters because images circulating online do not, by themselves, establish which object caused the teacher’s injury.
Investigators are expected to examine the available evidence as part of their inquiry.
4. Police Investigating Under Two Laws
Police said the case was being investigated under Section 324 of Malaysia’s Penal Code, which concerns voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon or means, and Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 1957.
The explosives-related investigation follows reports that firecrackers were brought to the school.
The teenager was detained after the incident but was subsequently released on police bail, according to Bernama. The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations have not been established in court.
Police have asked members of the public to avoid speculation and allow the investigation to proceed.
5. School Strengthens Security After the Incident
Tunku Putra-HELP International School announced additional security measures following the incident.
According to Bernama’s report on the school’s response, the school planned to station three auxiliary police officers on campus and introduce security checks for people entering its grounds.
The school also said it would review longer-term safety procedures in consultation with the relevant authorities.
Classes were scheduled to resume on Thursday, October 22, after the necessary clearance. The school said it would hold assemblies to address students’ concerns and provide counselling support to students or staff who needed it.
The Sarawak State Education Department also said it was prepared to provide psychosocial support to those affected, according to Bernama.
Investigation Continues
The incident has raised concerns about school safety and the circulation of violent footage involving young people.
For now, police are working to establish the full circumstances, including the sequence of events, the items involved and what led to the confrontation.
The student remains the subject of an investigation, not a court-established finding of guilt. Authorities have urged the public to respect the privacy of those involved and avoid spreading unverified claims while the case is being examined.
