French President Emmanuel Macron is expected to undertake an official State visit to Nigeria later this year, marking another significant milestone in the growing diplomatic relationship between both countries.
The announcement was made by the French Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Marc Fonbaustier, during celebrations marking France’s National Day (Bastille Day) held in Abuja on Tuesday, July 14.
The planned visit comes two years after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid a State visit to France in 2024 and is expected to further strengthen cooperation between Africa’s largest economy and one of Europe’s leading nations.

Macron’s visit to strengthen Nigeria-France relations
Speaking during the event, Ambassador Fonbaustier described President Macron’s planned visit as an opportunity for both leaders to review the progress made since President Tinubu’s visit to Paris and establish new areas of cooperation.
According to the ambassador, the meeting between the two presidents will help shape the future of relations between Nigeria and France across several strategic sectors.
“Together, our two Presidents will assess the progress of our roadmap and outline the key elements of our relationship for the years to come.”
He expressed confidence that the outcomes of the visit would benefit citizens of both countries.
Visit comes two years after Tinubu’s Paris trip
Macron’s planned trip follows President Tinubu’s official State visit to Paris, where both countries agreed to deepen cooperation in areas including trade, investment, security, energy, education, infrastructure and climate action.
Officials believe the reciprocal visit demonstrates the growing importance both governments place on their diplomatic relationship.
The State visit is expected to include bilateral meetings, economic discussions and engagements with business leaders from both countries.

“The partnership between Nigeria and France is, in reality, not just in words, a partnership between equals.”
The ambassador added that both nations remain committed to the principles contained in the United Nations Charter.

Fonbaustier noted that Nigeria and France share similar priorities regarding economic development and improving citizens’ quality of life.
He said both governments are committed to creating employment opportunities, expanding investments and promoting sustainable development.
The ambassador also highlighted environmental protection, biodiversity conservation, clean water and air quality as areas where both countries intend to increase cooperation.
According to him, future partnerships will focus on generating practical benefits for citizens while encouraging responsible economic growth.
Security and regional cooperation expected
