1. Flamingoes Become Africa’s First U-17 Women’s World Champions

The victory represents a historic breakthrough for African women’s football.

Nigeria became the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, which began in 2008.

The achievement also makes Nigeria the first African nation to win the men’s and women’s FIFA U-17 World Cups.

The Golden Eaglets previously won the boys’ competition five times, in 1985, 1993, 2007, 2013 and 2015.

According to the Nigeria Football Federation’s official report, the Flamingoes’ triumph marked the first FIFA World Cup title won by a Nigerian women’s national team.

2. Awawu Bashiru Opens Scoring Against Japan

Nigeria took the lead in the 39th minute through Awawu Bashiru.

The midfielder received a long ball from Mary Dunstan before sending an effort towards goal that slipped through the hands of Japanese goalkeeper Kou Kadowaki.

The goal gave Nigeria a crucial advantage after a competitive opening period in which both teams created attacking opportunities.

Bashiru’s breakthrough also increased confidence among the Nigerian players as they approached half-time.

3. Oluebube Umejiaku Scores Stunning Second Goal

Nigeria doubled their advantage shortly after the second-half restart.

In the 47th minute, Esther Stephen launched a long pass forward that found Oluebube Umejiaku in an attacking position.

The striker controlled the ball before delicately chipping the advancing Japanese goalkeeper to make it 2-0.

The goal proved decisive, giving Nigeria a comfortable cushion before Japan intensified its attacking pressure.

Umejiaku’s performance earned her the Player of the Match award, further highlighting her contribution to the historic victory.

4. Japan Launches Late Comeback Through Fuki Ito

Japan refused to surrender despite trailing by two goals.

The Japanese team increased its attacking pressure and eventually reduced the deficit in the 80th minute.

Anri Ito headed a corner back across goal, allowing her sister Fuki Ito to volley the ball into the net.

The goal made it 2-1 and created a tense final phase as Japan searched for an equaliser.

Nigeria’s defenders remained organised, however, and successfully protected their advantage until the final whistle.

5. Flamingoes Recover From Opening Defeat to Win Trophy

Nigeria’s journey to the championship was particularly remarkable because the team lost its opening group match.

The Flamingoes suffered a 2-1 defeat against Poland before recovering strongly to win the tournament.

They subsequently defeated Puerto Rico 2-0 and defending champions North Korea 3-1 in the group stage.

Nigeria then defeated Mexico 2-1 in the Round of 16, overcame Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-finals and beat Brazil 3-1 in the semi-finals.

Their victory against Japan completed an extraordinary turnaround and secured the country’s first championship in the competition.

6. Nigeria Completes Remarkable Knockout Run

The Flamingoes displayed determination throughout the knockout stages.

Their 2-1 victory over Mexico demonstrated their ability to handle difficult matches, while the narrow quarter-final win against Venezuela tested their defensive organisation.

The semi-final victory against Brazil was another major statement, with Nigeria defeating the South American side 3-1 to reach their first-ever U-17 Women’s World Cup final.

The team eventually overcame Japan to complete an impressive run of six consecutive victories after their opening defeat.

7. President Tinubu Congratulates Flamingoes on Historic Achievement

Nigeria’s historic triumph attracted congratulations from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

In a statement published by the State House, the president described the victory as a proud moment for Nigeria and a landmark achievement for African women’s football.

Tinubu praised the players for their courage, discipline and determination, noting that they had fulfilled their promise to bring the trophy home following their semi-final victory.

The championship has also generated celebrations among Nigerian football supporters and renewed calls for greater investment in women’s football development.

Conclusion

Nigeria’s Flamingoes have delivered one of the most remarkable achievements in the country’s football history by defeating Japan 2-1 to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

The victory represents Nigeria’s first title in the competition and a historic breakthrough for African women’s football.

With Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku delivering crucial goals, the young Nigerian team has secured its place in history and provided millions of supporters with a moment of national pride.
