Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been found guilty of first-degree murder in connection with the 1996 killing of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur, bringing a dramatic development to one of hip-hop’s most enduring unsolved cases.

The 63-year-old former gang member was convicted Monday, August 31, after jurors deliberated following a trial that lasted roughly two weeks in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis was charged with murder with a deadly weapon and gang enhancements. Although prosecutors acknowledged that he was not the person who pulled the trigger, they argued that Davis helped orchestrate the attack that ultimately claimed Shakur’s life.

The conviction comes nearly three decades after Shakur was fatally shot in a drive-by attack that shocked the music world.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis found guilty

The jury, made up of 10 women and six men, heard testimony from about two dozen prosecution witnesses and three defense witnesses during the trial.

Jurors were allowed to consider whether Duane “Keffe D” Davis was guilty of first- or second-degree murder. They ultimately returned a first-degree murder conviction.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis now faces the possibility of life in prison.

Prosecutors portrayed him as the person who helped organize the attack as retaliation for a physical confrontation earlier that night involving Shakur, his entourage and Davis’ nephew, Orlando “Baby Lane” Anderson.

According to the prosecution, the confrontation at the MGM Grand became the motive for the subsequent shooting.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Binu Palal argued during closing statements that Davis and the other men in the Cadillac deliberately searched for Shakur before eventually spotting his BMW near the Las Vegas Strip.

“It’s a plan, not an impulse,” Palal told jurors.

Prosecutors relied heavily on Davis’ own words

One of the most significant elements of the prosecution’s case was Davis’ history of publicly discussing the shooting.

Davis had spoken about the killing in interviews over the years, and his 2019 memoir also drew renewed attention to his alleged involvement.

Prosecutors presented some of those statements to the jury, arguing that Davis repeatedly placed himself inside the Cadillac involved in the shooting.

A 2008 police interview was particularly important. During that interview, Davis reportedly said he provided the firearm used in the attack and that his nephew, Orlando Anderson, opened fire.

Prosecutors argued that these statements supported their claim that Davis was a key figure in planning the attack.

Palal told jurors that Davis obtained a gun and helped organize an effort to find Shakur and Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight.

How Tupac Shakur was killed

Shakur was in Las Vegas on September 7, 1996, to attend a heavyweight boxing match between Mike Tyson and Bruce Seldon at the MGM Grand.

Later that night, Shakur was travelling in a BMW driven by Knight when a white Cadillac pulled alongside the vehicle at a red light near the Las Vegas Strip.

Gunfire suddenly erupted from the Cadillac.

Shakur was struck multiple times and critically wounded. He died six days later at the age of 25.

Knight survived the shooting.

The killing became one of the most famous unsolved cases in music history, generating countless theories about who was responsible and why the attack happened.

Defense argues Davis was lying

Davis’ attorneys strongly disputed the prosecution’s interpretation of his statements.

Defense lawyer Michael Sanft argued that Davis’ comments were examples of braggadocio and were made partly to gain attention and money rather than to provide an accurate account of what happened.

The defense also pointed to what it described as a lack of physical evidence placing Davis inside the Cadillac during the shooting.

Sanft argued that Duane “Keffe D” Davis’ words should not be treated as proof that he actually organized the killing.

The defense had previously attempted to prevent some of Davis’ statements from being admitted as evidence but was unsuccessful.

A case that remained unsolved for decades

For almost 30 years, Shakur’s death remained officially unresolved.

The investigation received renewed attention after Davis began publicly discussing his alleged knowledge of the shooting.

His interviews and memoir helped investigators revisit the case and eventually led to his arrest and prosecution.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis became the only person to face criminal charges in connection with Shakur’s killing.

The other men believed to have been inside the Cadillac, including Anderson, have since died, limiting the availability of direct eyewitness testimony.

Tupac’s legacy lives on

Tupac Shakur remains one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history.

Despite dying at just 25, he released numerous successful albums and became known for songs addressing poverty, racism, violence, relationships and social inequality.

His music has continued to influence generations of artists and fans around the world.

The conviction of Duane “Keffe D” Davis represents a major development in a case that has fascinated the public for decades.

While Duane “Keffe D” Davis was not accused of firing the fatal shots himself, prosecutors successfully argued that his alleged role in organizing the attack made him criminally responsible.

After nearly 30 years of uncertainty, the verdict marks a significant chapter in the long-running search for accountability in the death of Tupac Shakur.
