Igbo presidency has once again become a major topic of national discussion after Nigerian singer Brymo stated that it is time for Nigeria to seriously consider producing a president from the South-East region.

The singer, whose real name is Olawale Olofooro, made the remarks during a recent interview with Yanga FM Lagos, where he spoke about national unity, political representation, and the future of Nigeria’s leadership.

Brymo’s latest comments have attracted attention because they represent a significant shift from some of the positions he expressed during the heated debates surrounding the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking during the interview, Brymo said Nigeria should move beyond historical grievances and embrace reconciliation among its diverse ethnic groups.

According to him, the country has reached a stage where an Igbo presidency deserves serious consideration as part of efforts to strengthen national unity and inclusion.

He stated:

“I think it is high time for Igbo presidency. It is time for Nigeria to start considering Igbo presidency. Let’s let go of the past and reconcile our differences and unite as a nation.”

His remarks have sparked fresh conversations about political power rotation and the long-standing calls by many stakeholders for a president of Igbo extraction.

The question of an Igbo presidency has remained a significant issue in Nigerian politics for decades.

Supporters argue that the South-East deserves an opportunity to occupy the nation’s highest political office as part of efforts to promote fairness, inclusion, and national cohesion.

Many advocates believe that allowing an Igbo president could strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s federal structure and reinforce the principle of equal representation among the country’s geopolitical zones.

The issue has become particularly prominent in recent election cycles, with several political groups and community leaders calling for greater inclusion of the South-East in national leadership.

While supporting the idea of an Igbo presidency, Brymo also expressed concerns about the security situation in the South-East.

According to him, growing insecurity could complicate efforts to achieve broader political acceptance for an Igbo presidential candidate.

The singer argued that insecurity has sometimes been used by different groups across Nigeria as a political bargaining tool.

He suggested that such developments could undermine national stability and make political progress more difficult.

His comments are likely to generate debate, especially among political observers and stakeholders who have differing views on the causes of insecurity in various parts of the country.

During the interview, Brymo also spoke positively about Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The singer commended Tinubu’s handling of regional security issues and referenced the South-West security outfit known as Amotekun.

According to Brymo, one reason he appreciates the president is his belief that regional security initiatives should not evolve into separatist movements.

He argued that Nigeria faces enough security challenges across different regions and must remain focused on preserving national unity.

Brymo’s comments are expected to attract mixed reactions from Nigerians.

Some supporters have welcomed his endorsement of an Igbo presidency, viewing it as a call for inclusiveness and reconciliation.

Others, however, may revisit his previous comments during the 2023 election season, when he faced criticism over remarks many interpreted as opposing an Igbo presidential candidate.

As a result, his latest position is likely to generate significant discussion across political and social media platforms.

The conversation surrounding an Igbo presidency is expected to remain a major issue as Nigeria moves closer to future elections.

Questions about equity, power rotation, regional representation, and national unity continue to shape political discourse across the country.

Brymo’s intervention adds another voice to the ongoing debate, highlighting both the aspirations of many Nigerians for broader representation and the challenges that remain in achieving national consensus.

Whether his comments influence public opinion remains to be seen, but they have undoubtedly reignited discussion about one of Nigeria’s most significant political questions.
