A 26-year-old Belgian car salesman, Clément Vandenkerckhove, has officially been recognised as a prince of Belgium after a DNA test confirmed that his biological father is Prince Laurent, the younger brother of King Philippe.

The surprising development has brought renewed attention to the Belgian royal family and a previously private family story involving Vandenkerckhove’s mother, Belgian singer Wendy Van Wanten, whose real name is Iris Vandenkerckhove.

DNA Test Confirms Royal Parentage

Vandenkerckhove’s royal connection was formally recognised following a DNA test that confirmed Prince Laurent as his biological father.

The legal recognition reportedly took place during a low-key town hall ceremony about six months ago.

The development means Vandenkerckhove is now legally recognised as the son of the 63-year-old prince.

His mother had reportedly been romantically involved with Prince Laurent during the 1990s after the pair met at a fashion show in Paris.

For years, however, the identity of Vandenkerckhove’s biological father remained private.

Mother Revealed His Father at 16

Vandenkerckhove was born in August 2000, several years before Prince Laurent married Princess Claire in 2003.

According to reports, his mother did not reveal the identity of his biological father until he was 16.

The revelation reportedly changed his understanding of his family background and eventually led to efforts to establish a relationship with Prince Laurent.

Rather than immediately entering the public spotlight, Vandenkerckhove continued living his life away from the royal family’s official activities.

Vandenkerckhove Reconnected With Prince Laurent

In a television documentary, Vandenkerckhove reportedly discussed his journey of reconnecting with Prince Laurent after discovering his royal lineage.

He said the pair reconnected several years after he learned about his father’s identity.

The father and son later went to a hospital together to undergo DNA testing.

The test ultimately confirmed their biological relationship and helped open the door to more conversations between them.

The experience reportedly allowed the two to develop a relationship after years of uncertainty.

New Prince Gains Private Estate Rights

Although Vandenkerckhove has now been legally recognised as Prince Laurent’s son, his new status comes with important limitations.

He is entitled to equal rights to Prince Laurent’s private estate alongside his three half-siblings: Princess Louise, Prince Nicolas and Prince Aymeric.

However, his recognition does not automatically give him all the privileges associated with senior members of the Belgian royal family.

He will not receive a royal allowance and will not perform official royal duties.

No Royal Allowance or Official Duties

Despite being recognised as Prince Laurent’s son, Vandenkerckhove does not have a role within the Belgian monarchy’s official structure.

He also has no place in the line of succession to the Belgian throne.

His recognition is therefore primarily a legal and family matter rather than a change to the country’s succession arrangements.

Vandenkerckhove is expected to continue living his life outside the traditional duties associated with working members of the royal family.

Why He Will Keep His Family Name

Vandenkerckhove is reportedly eligible to adopt his father’s historic family name, Saxe-Coburg.

However, he has indicated that he intends to keep his current surname, Vandenkerckhove.

The decision is reportedly motivated by his respect for his mother and the role she played in raising him.

He explained that abandoning the family name would feel like betraying everything his mother had done for him while growing up.

The decision means that despite his newly recognised royal heritage, he intends to maintain a strong connection to his maternal family identity.

Another Belgian Royal Paternity Case

Vandenkerckhove’s recognition is not the first major paternity story involving the Belgian royal family.

In 2020, former Belgian King Albert II formally recognised Princess Delphine as his daughter following a lengthy legal battle.

The case attracted significant international attention and highlighted the complex legal and personal issues surrounding royal parentage.

Vandenkerckhove’s story is different in that his biological relationship with Prince Laurent has now been established through DNA testing and subsequently recognised through a legal process.

His story has nevertheless generated renewed interest in the private lives and family histories of members of Europe’s royal families.

For Vandenkerckhove, the development represents more than simply acquiring a royal title. It also marks the formal recognition of a biological relationship that remained largely private for much of his childhood.

While he will not carry out official royal duties or join the line of succession, his new legal status gives him a recognised place within Prince Laurent’s family and equal rights to his father’s private estate.
