Former US President Barack Obama has sparked fresh discussion after saying he believes things would be better if women were placed in charge of every government around the world for two years.

Obama made the remarks during a conversation with historian Doris Kearns Goodwin at Salem State University, where he also spoke about leadership, younger generations and the political climate.

Reflecting on his time in the White House, Obama said he had sometimes imagined what the world might look like if women temporarily led governments across the globe.

“Even when I was President, I sometimes fantasized about if you put women in charge of every government for like two years, and then just kind of saw, ‘All right, how are things going?’” Obama said.

He then gave his assessment of the hypothetical scenario.

“I have a strong belief that things wouldn’t be perfect, but they’d be better. I’m confident about that. I really do,” he added.

Obama discusses women and leadership

Obama’s comments came during a broader discussion about giving new generations opportunities to influence society.

Rather than proposing an actual change to the political systems of individual countries, the former president presented the idea as a hypothetical scenario.

His remarks suggest that he believes greater female representation at the highest levels of government could produce different outcomes.

The statement has since attracted attention online, with the clip circulating widely across social media.

Some reports have focused on Obama’s confidence that such a two-year experiment would improve conditions, while others have questioned whether leadership outcomes can be linked to gender alone.

A hypothetical scenario, not a policy proposal

Obama did not present the idea as a formal political proposal or call for governments around the world to immediately replace male leaders with women.

Instead, he described it as something he had imagined during his presidency.

The former president’s comments therefore centre on a hypothetical comparison rather than a specific government policy.

His remarks also came in the context of a wider conversation about political leadership and the importance of making room for younger voices.

Obama has previously spoken about the need for leaders to understand when it is time to allow a new generation to take responsibility.

Obama has made similar comments before

The former president has expressed a similar view about women in leadership in the past.

In 2019, while speaking at a leadership event in Singapore, Obama discussed the concentration of political power among older leaders and argued that more women in positions of authority could improve governance.

He also criticised the tendency of some political leaders to remain in power for too long.

His latest remarks echo that earlier argument, although the 2026 comments have attracted renewed attention because of the way he framed the idea as a two-year global experiment.

Social media reacts to Obama’s remarks

The comments quickly became a topic of debate online after footage of the discussion circulated.

Supporters of Obama’s argument have pointed to the importance of increasing women’s representation in political leadership, while critics have questioned whether a person’s gender alone can determine the quality of government.

The debate has also led to wider discussions about leadership styles, political institutions and the role of experience in government.

The responses demonstrate how quickly comments from former presidents can become part of broader conversations about politics and society.

Obama also discusses America’s political climate

During the Salem State University conversation, Obama also addressed the current political environment in the United States.

He argued that the country may not be as divided among ordinary people as political coverage and public debate sometimes suggest.

He said Americans could still find common ground despite the divisions visible in politics and the media.

The former president has remained active in public discussions since leaving office, frequently speaking about democracy, leadership, civic engagement and the role of younger generations.

What Obama actually said

His latest comments do not amount to a claim that every woman would govern better than every man.

Rather, he described a hypothetical situation in which women would temporarily lead every government and said he personally believed the results would be better, while acknowledging that the world would not become perfect.

That distinction has become important as the comments continue to circulate online.

For now, Obama’s remarks have opened another debate about women’s representation in government and whether changing who holds political power can change the way governments operate.

The former president remains confident in his hypothetical conclusion: he believes putting women in charge of governments around the world for two years would make things better.
