Babcock University has announced that it is taking legal action against Nigerian streamer and content creator Carter Efe over allegations of certificate forgery after he reportedly claimed to have graduated from the institution with top honours.
The controversy erupted after Carter Efe appeared in an interview with popular content creator Egungun of Lagos, where he stated that he had completed his studies at Babcock University and graduated with an outstanding academic record.
Following the interview, the streamer reportedly shared what he claimed was his graduation certificate on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The document quickly circulated online, attracting widespread attention and sparking debates among social media users.
According to the viral post, Carter Efe claimed he earned a degree in Biochemistry from Babcock University with what he described as a “First Class Upper” classification.
The claim generated mixed reactions, with some fans congratulating the entertainer while others questioned the authenticity of the certificate.
As discussions intensified online, the university responded publicly to clarify its position.
In an official statement released on Sunday, Babcock University dismissed the claims, stating that the certificate circulating online was not genuine.
The institution stressed that it does not issue undergraduate certificates with the classification “First Class Upper,” noting that such a category does not exist within its academic grading system.
The university also clarified that it does not award what it described as “Honorary Certificates” for undergraduate academic performance.
The statement read:
“FRAUD ALERT. Babcock University does not issue ‘Honorary Certificates’ for undergraduate performance and has no classification known as ‘First Class Upper.'”
The university urged members of the public to disregard any documents carrying such claims.
Beyond denying the authenticity of the certificate, Babcock University disclosed that it intends to pursue legal remedies against those responsible for creating or circulating the alleged forged documents.
The institution stated:
“The University will pursue appropriate legal action against those responsible for these forgeries.”
The announcement signals the university’s determination to protect the integrity of its academic records and qualifications.
The university also encouraged employers, institutions and members of the public to verify academic credentials through its Office of the Registrar before accepting any claims regarding graduation or degree classifications.
According to the statement, official verification remains the only reliable method for confirming the authenticity of certificates issued by the institution.

The controversy has generated widespread discussion across social media, with many Nigerians expressing surprise over the university’s swift response.
Some users called for a full investigation into the source of the alleged certificate, while others urged Carter Efe to respond publicly to the allegations.
At the time of writing, the streamer has not issued a detailed public statement addressing Babcock University’s legal warning or the claims surrounding the certificate.
Cases involving alleged certificate forgery continue to attract serious attention because educational qualifications play a critical role in employment, admissions and professional licensing.
Universities across Nigeria have increasingly strengthened their verification systems to combat the circulation of fake certificates and protect the credibility of their graduates.
Babcock University’s latest statement underscores the institution’s commitment to safeguarding its reputation and ensuring that only legitimately earned qualifications are recognised.
As the matter develops, many observers will be watching closely to see whether legal proceedings are formally initiated and whether Carter Efe responds to the allegations made by the university.
