The government is looking into private universities that started in the last 15 years.
Over 100 private universities were started in the last 15 years.
A special group from different government departments is checking if these new universities have all the things they need, like the right buildings, good management, enough money, and the right kind of teachers.
They want to know if these universities are doing things properly. People can give information to this group to help them with their investigation.
In December 2023, a journalist found out he could get a degree really quickly from Benin Republic and even did the one-year national service in Nigeria with that fake degree. The government decided to look into all the private universities that started in the last 15 years because of this. The Minister of Education announced this in Abuja while starting a committee to deal with fake degrees and degree mills in the country.
The committee will check if any government departments or officials helped with getting these fake degrees recognized. They’ll also look into the rules for recognizing foreign universities and programs, see if there are any fake foreign universities in Nigeria, and suggest ways to prevent this from happening again. They’ll also suggest ways to make the system for recognizing degrees in Nigeria better and look into the rules for giving licenses to new universities by the National Universities Commission.
