How to take care of your skin?

By Judith Obiekwe

Just like how we need food to nourish our body and stay healthy, how to take care of your skin is very key and it  needs the proper attention and care to stay healthy.

The skin is one of the most neglected or should I say mistreated part of the body. Nowadays where all sorts of things are packaged and sold to be ‘organic’, people who are in desperate need to repair their skin or so to say, maintain their skin are wooed by these “organic” products which may seem to have a quick positive effect but in the long run, the effect is very negative.

The good thing is I am not here to condemn your hard work or step on your ignorance without proffering solutions so I will be dropping ‘the skincare routine’ I expect everyone both male and female should imbibe judiciously to make your skin look its best and healthy, prevent and treat wrinkles and acne and prevents fast aging.

How to take care of your skin

It is called the five step routine of How to take care of your skin, which is divided into cleanse, treat and moisturize.

Before I delve into the steps, one has to know his/her skin type to know the kind of products and what to look out for in the products, which is why you are advised to visit a dermatologist first. For instance, if your skin is acne prone, one should look out for products that have salicylic acid, niacinamide or retinol.

If you have a sensitive skin you really need to know How to take care of your skin , avoid products that are alcohol based and have fragrance as it may irritate the skin leading to inflammation or redness and sometimes hyperpigmentation. The popularly known skin types are; normal skin, oily skin, dry skin and combination skin.

The first step is CLEANSE. Cleansing is a very important process in your skin care routine that should never be missed especially at night. The purpose of the cleanser is to remove any form of dirt, debris or makeup from your face and neck. Now you can see why the cleansing step cannot be missed.

  • Now the importance of cleansing is  a major factor on how to take care of your skin and we’ll known, I will talk about what we call double cleansing.
  • Double cleansing is not using the same cleanser twice but using an oil based cleanser first then a foamy or water based cleanser afterward. The importance of double cleansing especially at night is that the oil or water based cleanser helps remove makeup, products, dirt and any form of debris easier and faster while the foamy or lotion cleaner helps to remove any lingering dirt or oil out of your pores that was left from the initial cleansing. An oil cleanser, a cleansing balm or micellar cleansing water can be used to cleanse first while a foamy
  • cleanser or a cleansing lotion can be used afterward.

  • The second step is TONE. Toner is an optional step, but if you have a toner you like, you should absolutely use it. A toner can be a great way to balance your skin’s pH. If you have acne-prone skin, look for a toner with ingredients like salicylic acid to calm breakouts. If you have dry or sensitive skin, opt for a hydrating toner to soothe. It is advisable to avoid alcohol based toners especially for people with sensitive skin as it can cause inflammation, redness or strip your skin off its barrier which is bad for the skin.
The third step is FACE SERUM. These serums or creams are packed full of skincare

  • superheroes like vitamin C, retinol, alpha hydroxy acid, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, mandelic acid and more. Face serums can make a huge difference in How to take care of your Skin  over time and in the health of your skin and just in the appearance and the aging of your skin. They help brighten the skin by sloughing off dead skin cells. They also help build your collagen and boosts radiance. It is advisable for young adults and older people to invest in face serums or creams as most of them helps prevent wrinkles, hydrate the skin, prevents aging and acne, brightens the skin and more
  • The fourth step is MOISTURIZE. After you have treated your skin, it is time to moisturize. Moisturizer
  • keeps your skin hydrated and helps strengthen your skin barrier. For daytime use, I advise you opt for a lighter moisturizer that will soak in quickly and won’t cause pilling under makeup. Moisturizer is also an important process of your skin care routine that should not be neglected because it helps maintain your skin’s healthy cells and to protect it from irritation. When your skin is dry and irritated, it actually causes breakouts and acne. By moisturizing your skin, you can reduce your chances of any skin problems arising.
  • Moisturizing is very important at night as it creates a barrier that seals in active ingredients and hydration
  • The fifth step is SUNSCREEN. This step is said to be the holy grail of skin care. Without the implication of sunscreen, applying the other products is like a waste of time. One of the most notable and obvious benefits of sunscreen also called SPF is it protects your skin against the sun’s broad spectrum of harmful UV rays. While you do need the sun for your daily dose of Vitamin D, it does not imply that you should put your health at risk. Applying sunscreen actually blocks these harmful rays from penetrating the skin and triggering skin disorders.
Other benefits include; lowers skin cancer risks, prevents premature aging, prevents sun burns and tanning as sunburns weaken the skin subjecting it to more bruises. Your skin may suffer repeated attacks of swelling, itching, redness and peeling and this is as a result of the exposure to UVB rays and this causes a risk of skin cancer. A study published in ‘Annals of Epidemiology’ in August 2008 suggested that recurring occurrences of sunburns could actually put you at a higher risk of lethal melanoma. The essential skin proteins, such as collagen, keratin, and elastin are protected by sunscreen. These proteins are required for keeping the skin smooth and healthy.
  • Sunscreen should also be applied when you are indoors because the windows do not block out UVA/UVB rays from penetrating thereby harming your skin. For better results, it is advisable to reapply your sunscreen bi-hourly every day and to do this and still keep your makeup intact, you can opt out for spray SPF, or use make up products that have SPF in it. It is also advisable to use sunscreens that are from SPF-45 upwards as it yields more results..catch on Jumia and Amazon
