Russian chess official Sergei Indeikin has died at the age of 36 after reportedly developing a severe form of malaria following a work trip to Nigeria.

Indeikin, who served as an operational manager and delegate for the International Chess Federation (FIDE), reportedly travelled to Abuja earlier this month for the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships. The tournament was held from August 1 to 8, 2026.

His sudden death has shocked colleagues and members of the international chess community, with FIDE describing him as an important member of its operations team.

According to reports from Russian media, Indeikin became ill after leaving Nigeria and travelling to Uzbekistan for work.

His father, Alexander Indeikin, reportedly said his son began experiencing symptoms while in Uzbekistan. He later travelled back to Russia, eventually reaching Perm, where his health deteriorated rapidly.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance, but doctors were unable to save him.

Russian reports have linked his illness to severe malaria, with family members saying the disease may have been contracted during his time in Nigeria.

His mother, Tatiana Indeikina, reportedly described the illness as extremely rapid and severe.

However, it is important to note that FIDE has not publicly confirmed malaria as the official medical cause of death. When the federation announced his passing on August 23, it described his death as following a “sudden illness.”

His work took him to Abuja

Indeikin was in Nigeria as part of his professional responsibilities with FIDE.

The federation’s records confirm his involvement in the World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships held in Abuja. He was among the officials responsible for helping ensure the successful organisation of the international competition.

The event was significant for the African chess community because it brought international amateur players and officials together in Nigeria.

Following the tournament, Indeikin travelled onward before returning to Russia.

Reports subsequently emerged that he had contracted malaria, allegedly after being bitten by an infected mosquito during his Nigerian assignment.

FIDE mourns its respected colleague

FIDE announced Indeikin’s death on August 23 in an emotional tribute.

The federation said he had worked at FIDE events since 2021 and had quickly become an integral part of its operations.

Over the years, he worked behind the scenes at some of the world’s biggest chess competitions, including World Championship matches, World Cups, Candidates Tournaments, and World Rapid and Blitz Championships.

FIDE said his work was often not visible to spectators, but those who worked with him understood the level of responsibility and dedication he brought to every assignment.

The federation also described him as a reliable colleague and a kind person who contributed significantly to its international operations.

A career built around international chess

Indeikin’s career with FIDE required extensive international travel.

His role involved supporting the organisation and smooth running of major tournaments across different countries.

According to FIDE, he travelled around the world to ensure competitions were professionally and efficiently organised and that events met the federation’s standards.

His work placed him behind some of the biggest moments in international chess, even though he was not necessarily a familiar name to spectators watching the games.

The federation’s tribute also highlighted a more personal side of his character.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Indeikin reportedly supported an orphanage. FIDE said he would bring chess memorabilia and small gifts for children from countries he visited during his work.

Questions surrounding malaria

The reports surrounding Indeikin’s death have renewed attention on the dangers posed by malaria, particularly for international travellers visiting areas where the disease is prevalent.

Malaria is transmitted through the bites of infected mosquitoes and can become life-threatening when severe disease develops.

Several Russian media reports have suggested that Indeikin contracted the disease in Nigeria, but that connection has not been independently established publicly by FIDE.

For that reason, reports about the exact circumstances surrounding his infection should be treated with caution until further official information becomes available.

Tributes after his sudden death

Indeikin is survived by his wife and young daughter.

His death at just 36 has left colleagues and friends mourning a professional described as dedicated, dependable and compassionate.

FIDE extended its condolences to his wife, daughter, family, friends and everyone who worked with him.

The international chess community is now remembering Indeikin not only for the tournaments he helped organise but also for the personal qualities colleagues say he brought to his work.

His passing represents a painful loss for FIDE and the many people who encountered him during his years of service to international chess.

As tributes continue to emerge, Sergei Indeikin will be remembered as a committed professional whose work helped major chess competitions run smoothly around the world.
