Maine Democratic Senate candidate Troy Jackson has found himself at the center of intense public attention following a report alleging that he and his longtime partner, Lana Pelletier, are second cousins and share two adult children together.

The claims, first published by independent journalist Steve Robinson, have quickly generated widespread discussion online, particularly as Jackson prepares for a high-profile campaign to unseat incumbent Republican Senator Susan Collins in the 2026 U.S. Senate election.

According to the report, Jackson and Pelletier have been together for decades after first meeting as teenagers in northern Maine. While the revelation has sparked controversy in some quarters, the report also notes that such relationships are legal under Maine law and are not considered unusual in some rural communities near the Canadian border.

Jackson’s campaign has strongly condemned what it describes as politically motivated attacks on his family, accusing opponents of attempting to distract voters from key campaign issues.

Report claims couple are second cousins

According to genealogical records referenced in the report, Jackson and Pelletier share the same great-grandparents.

The report states that Jackson’s maternal grandmother and Pelletier’s paternal grandfather were siblings. As a result, Jackson’s mother and Pelletier’s father were first cousins, making Jackson and Pelletier second cousins.

The couple reportedly attended Fort Kent High School together after growing up in the village of Allagash, a small community in northern Maine.

They have remained together ever since and share two adult sons.

Although Jackson has previously referred to Pelletier as his wife in public, the report claims the couple never legally married, citing information from local residents.

Neither Jackson nor Pelletier has publicly disputed the genealogical information contained in the report.

Maine law allows second-cousin relationships

One of the key issues highlighted by the report is that the relationship does not violate Maine law.

Unlike several close family relationships that are prohibited under state law, marriages or relationships between second cousins are not restricted.

Maine law prohibits marriages involving parents, children, grandparents, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

The report also explains that while marriages between first cousins were originally banned in 1985, later amendments created exceptions allowing first cousins to marry after obtaining genetic counseling and certification showing a low risk of inherited genetic disorders in future children.

Second cousins, however, face no such legal limitations.

As a result, legal experts have noted that the reported relationship would not breach any existing marriage or family laws in Maine.

Political timing raises attention

The allegations surfaced only days after Jackson secured the Democratic Party’s nomination to challenge Senator Susan Collins in one of the country’s closely watched Senate races.

Jackson officially became the Democratic nominee during a special party convention held on July 25, following the withdrawal of fellow candidate Graham Platner.

His campaign has largely focused on issues affecting working-class families, including employment, healthcare, infrastructure and economic development in rural Maine.

The controversy has now shifted some public attention away from policy discussions toward his personal life.

Campaign dismisses report as political attack

Jackson’s campaign responded swiftly to the publication, accusing political opponents of attempting to damage his reputation ahead of the election.

In a statement released after the report gained national attention, the campaign defended Jackson and criticised what it described as unnecessary personal attacks.

The statement read:

“Susan Collins will do anything to distract from the fact that she votes with Trump 96 percent of the time and has sold out working people in Maine. Personal attacks on Troy’s family are shameful and desperate.”

The campaign did not directly dispute the family relationship outlined in the report but instead argued that voters should remain focused on issues affecting the state rather than private family matters.

Long political career

Jackson has built a lengthy political career in Maine.

Before entering politics, he worked as a logger and later became known as a strong advocate for labour rights and rural communities.

He eventually rose to become President of the Maine State Senate, earning recognition for championing policies benefiting workers and small towns across the state.

Supporters describe him as someone who understands the challenges faced by ordinary families because of his working-class background.

His campaign continues to emphasize economic opportunity and affordable living as central themes heading into the general election.

Debate continues online

Since the report was published, reactions have remained divided across social media platforms.

Some users questioned the ethics of publicising a candidate’s family history, particularly when the reported relationship is legal under state law.

Others argued that public officials should expect increased scrutiny of their personal lives, especially during election campaigns.

Political analysts note that personal controversies often emerge during competitive elections and can quickly dominate headlines regardless of whether they involve illegal conduct.

Focus shifts back to election campaign

Despite the renewed attention surrounding his personal life, Jackson’s campaign insists it remains focused on defeating Senator Susan Collins in November.

The race is expected to attract significant national interest, with both parties viewing Maine as an important battleground.

Whether the controversy ultimately influences voters remains uncertain.

For now, the report has introduced a new talking point into an already competitive Senate contest, while also highlighting the legal distinctions surrounding family relationships under Maine law.

As campaigning intensifies in the coming months, Jackson is likely to continue emphasizing policy issues while attempting to move public discussion away from his private life and back toward the issues he says matter most to Maine voters.
