One of the standout attractions at the WTO Open Day was the performance by an Adamma masquerade, one of the most recognizable cultural symbols of southeastern Nigeria.

Dressed in elaborate woven raffia and wearing a beautifully carved maiden mask, the masquerade captivated spectators with graceful movements and energetic footwork that reflected the richness of Igbo traditional dance.

As the rhythmic sounds of the Ogene drums echoed through the square, the performance quickly drew the attention of visitors gathered at the event.

The vibrant display transformed part of Geneva into a colourful celebration of Nigerian culture.

Rather than simply watching from the sidelines, Okonjo-Iweala enthusiastically joined the performance.

The WTO chief immediately picked up the rhythm of the traditional drums, matching the masquerade’s movements with confident dance steps that delighted spectators.

She smiled throughout the performance, rolling her shoulders and moving gracefully to the beat as the masquerade danced around her.

The crowd responded with loud cheers and applause, with many capturing the moment on their phones.

Within hours, videos of the dance began circulating across social media platforms, where they quickly attracted thousands of views and positive reactions.

The video has generated widespread praise online, with many Nigerians expressing pride in seeing one of the country’s most respected international figures embracing her cultural roots.

Several social media users described the moment as a refreshing reminder that African traditions deserve global recognition.

Others applauded Okonjo-Iweala for showing that occupying one of the world’s most influential economic positions does not require abandoning one’s cultural identity.

Many commenters also praised the organisers for including traditional performances that reflected the diversity of cultures represented within the WTO community.

Promoting Culture on a Global Stage

The WTO Open Day is designed to welcome members of the public into the organisation while showcasing the cultures of its member countries through music, food, exhibitions, and traditional performances.

This year’s event featured cultural displays from several nations, encouraging visitors to experience the diversity that exists within the global trading community.

Nigeria’s presentation stood out for its colourful costumes, energetic drumming, and authentic traditional performances, drawing significant attention from attendees.

Okonjo-Iweala’s participation further elevated the country’s cultural showcase.
