Nigerians have once again demonstrated the power of compassion and unity after content creator King Mitchy announced that a remarkable ₦7.5 million was raised to support the family of late Nollywood icon John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu.

The fundraising campaign gained momentum following an emotional interview in which Mr Ibu’s widow, Stella Maris, opened up about the severe financial difficulties facing the family since the beloved actor’s passing. Her heartbreaking revelations touched thousands of Nigerians, prompting an overwhelming response from individuals eager to help.

According to King Mitchy, the generous donations poured in from people across the country and beyond after she shared the family’s story on social media.

The content creator later posted an update on Friday, revealing that a total of ₦7.5 million had been successfully raised within a short period.

To express her gratitude, Stella Maris appeared in a video shared by King Mitchy, where she emotionally knelt down to thank every Nigerian who contributed to the fundraising effort.

Visibly moved by the generosity shown to her family, she explained that the money would immediately be used to address several urgent financial challenges affecting her children and household.

According to Stella Maris, the funds will cover the children’s outstanding school fees, ensuring they can return to school after being forced to stay home because of unpaid tuition.

She also disclosed that part of the money would pay for her eldest daughter’s WAEC examination registration, giving her the opportunity to continue her education without interruption.

In addition to educational expenses, the donations will be used to settle outstanding house rent and meet other pressing household needs that have accumulated over recent months.

King Mitchy also revealed that she spent considerable time speaking privately with Stella Maris after the fundraising exercise.

During their discussion, she advised the widow to relocate from her current residence to a more affordable apartment in order to reduce the family’s monthly financial burden.

Sharing details of the conversation, King Mitchy wrote:

“First of all, a massive THANK YOU to every single person who donated and shared. Together, we raised ₦7.5 Million for this family!

“This money will cover:
• The children’s school fees
• The eldest daughter’s WAEC exams
• Their rent and other urgent needs.”

King Mitchy added that their conversation extended beyond the fundraising itself.

“After speaking with the mother, I advised her to move to a more affordable place. We had a very long, heartfelt conversation — I’ll be posting the other parts soon because there’s so much to share.”

King Mitchy also addressed the numerous questions she received from followers regarding her involvement with the family.

She explained that she had only learned about their situation two days earlier after being contacted by a concerned neighbour.

According to her, she had no prior relationship with the family and became involved solely because she wanted to help the children receive the support they desperately needed.

She wrote:

“A lot of you have been sending questions — I asked her most of them. Just to clarify: I only got to know about this family two days ago when a neighbor reached out. I knew nothing before then. My only focus has always been making sure these children get the help they deserve.”

The content creator concluded by thanking everyone who contributed financially or shared the family’s story online.

“God bless every one of you who showed up for them. This is what we can achieve when we come together. ❤️ Let’s keep supporting families in need.”

The fundraising campaign followed a widely shared interview in which Stella Maris painted a troubling picture of life after the death of her husband.

She revealed that the family had been living without electricity for approximately two months because they could not afford to pay outstanding utility bills.

According to her, they often had to visit neighbours simply to charge their mobile phones.

King Mitchy also explained that unpaid rent had become another major concern while the children’s education had been severely disrupted due to unpaid school fees.

The emotional interview generated widespread sympathy across social media, with many Nigerians expressing sadness that the family of one of the country’s most celebrated comedians had fallen into such financial hardship.

Thousands praised King Mitchy for using her platform to bring attention to the family’s plight rather than simply creating entertainment content.

Many social media users also commended ordinary Nigerians whose individual donations collectively produced a life-changing outcome for the family.

The success of the fundraising campaign has reignited conversations about the welfare of entertainers after retirement or death, with many calling for stronger support systems within the entertainment industry.

John Okafor, widely known as Mr Ibu, was one of Nigeria’s most beloved comic actors.

His unique style of comedy, expressive facial reactions, and unforgettable performances made him a household name across Africa for more than two decades.

In November 2023, the veteran actor underwent a leg amputation following complications from a prolonged illness that required multiple surgeries.

Despite efforts to save his life, Mr Ibu passed away on March 2, 2024, at the age of 62 after suffering cardiac arrest.

He was laid to rest in June 2024 in his hometown of Amuri, located in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.

Although nothing can replace the legendary actor, the ₦7.5 million raised through King Mitchy’s campaign has provided hope and immediate relief for the family he left behind.

The overwhelming response from Nigerians serves as another reminder of the power of collective generosity, proving that when communities unite for a worthy cause, lives can be transformed.
