Oscar-nominated actress Ann Blyth, one of the last surviving stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age, has died peacefully at the age of 98, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned more than seven decades across film, television, radio, and musical theatre.

According to reports shared by entertainment journalist George Pennacchio of KABC, Blyth died of natural causes on Wednesday, June 24, just weeks before what would have been her 99th birthday.

Ann Blyth’s passing has prompted tributes from fans, fellow performers, and film lovers around the world who remember her as one of the most versatile actresses of classic Hollywood.

Born on August 16, 1927, in New York City, Ann Blyth displayed exceptional talent from a very young age.

Ann Blyth began performing on children’s radio programmes when she was only six years old, showcasing both her acting ability and vocal talent.

Ann Blyth’s early success quickly opened doors in theatre, and by the age of 12 she had already reached Broadway, appearing in Lillian Hellman’s acclaimed play Watch on the Rhine in 1941.

Her impressive performances soon attracted the attention of Universal Studios, which signed her to a contract during her teenage years.

Blyth made her film debut in the 1944 musical Chip Off the Old Block, introducing audiences to a young actress with remarkable screen presence.

However, it was her unforgettable performance in the 1945 psychological drama Mildred Pierce that transformed her into one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars.

In the film, Blyth portrayed Veda Pierce, the manipulative and ambitious daughter of the title character played by legendary actress Joan Crawford.

Her powerful portrayal earned widespread critical acclaim and secured an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

Remarkably, she was only 16 years old at the time, making her one of the youngest performers ever nominated in the category.

Although she did not win the Oscar, the nomination established Blyth as one of the most promising actresses of her generation.

Following the success of Mildred Pierce, she built an impressive film career during the late 1940s and 1950s.

She appeared in numerous successful productions including Killer McCoy (1947), Brute Force (1947), Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid (1948), Our Very Own (1950), and The Great Caruso (1951).

Her career later expanded into television, where she featured in several popular American series.

Among her television credits were appearances in Wagon Train, The Twilight Zone, Quincy, M.E., and Murder, She Wrote, introducing her to new generations of viewers.

Away from the screen, Blyth also enjoyed tremendous success on stage.

She became widely admired for her performances in celebrated musical productions including The King and I, The Sound of Music, and Show Boat.

Her background in singing allowed her to transition seamlessly between dramatic acting and musical theatre throughout her career.

In later years, she toured extensively across the United States, performing songs from the Great American Songbook alongside entertainers Bill Hayes and Donald O’Connor.

Following news of her death, George Pennacchio paid tribute on Facebook by reflecting on her extraordinary achievements.

He noted that Blyth began performing professionally at six years old, reached Broadway before her teenage years, entered Hollywood as a young actress, and maintained an active career for more than 70 years.

Beyond entertainment, Pennacchio also highlighted Blyth’s commitment to charitable work and community service.

According to her family, she devoted much of her later life to philanthropy while enjoying quieter hobbies including gardening, knitting, and oil painting.

Friends and relatives frequently received paintings created by Blyth herself, reflecting her generous and artistic nature beyond acting.

Ann Blyth also maintained a close relationship with her admirers throughout her life.

Her family revealed that she personally answered fan mail whenever possible, appreciating the continued support she received from audiences across several generations.

In recognition of her contribution to the entertainment industry, Ann Blyth was honoured with her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, permanently securing her place among cinema’s greatest performers.

While many stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age gradually faded from public memory, Blyth remained admired for both her professional achievements and graceful personal life.

She was married to Dr. James McNulty, with whom she shared a long and happy marriage until his death.

Together they raised five children and built a close-knit family.

She is survived by her five children, ten grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Her passing marks the loss of another important figure from one of Hollywood’s most celebrated eras.

Ann Blyth’s legacy extends far beyond awards and film credits.

Her remarkable journey—from a child performer on radio to an Oscar-nominated actress, Broadway star, television performer, and beloved philanthropist—continues to inspire generations of artists and movie lovers.

Though she is gone, her unforgettable performances and enduring contributions to American entertainment ensure that her name will remain an important part of Hollywood history for many years to come.
