A Swiss mother and her husband have been freed after spending 599 days in custody following convictions linked to allegations of physical and sexual abuse made by the woman’s teenage daughter.
The case has sparked fresh questions about the justice system after the daughter, who is now 19, reportedly admitted that she fabricated the allegations when she was 14.
According to reports citing Swiss newspaper Tages-Anzeiger, the woman contacted the Zurich High Court years after making the allegations and withdrew her claims. The court has since overturned the convictions of her mother and stepfather.

The girl originally accused her mother and stepfather of repeatedly abusing her.
Her allegations included claims of physical violence and sexual abuse by her stepfather. She reportedly told authorities that she had been beaten and subjected to various forms of punishment inside the family home.
The seriousness of the accusations led authorities to intervene, with the teenager and her younger siblings eventually placed in foster care.
However, years later, the woman changed her account.
In her confession, she reportedly said she had lied because she “only wanted her freedom” and claimed that she had never intended for the allegations to result in a police investigation.
Court initially considered her claims highly credible

A four-member expert team reportedly assessed her statements as having a high probability of credibility.
The Zurich District Court subsequently convicted the stepfather in July 2021 and sentenced him to three years in prison. The mother received a 22-month sentence for her role in the case.
Reports also indicate that teachers had previously told the court that the teenager was known to lie regularly and had spoken about hearing voices.
