Love is often seen as the foundation of a marriage, but it alone is not sufficient to sustain a long-term, healthy relationship.

There are days when you don’t feel the love of your partner very much and there are also days when you don’t feel like loving at all.

Aside from feelings, what about physical expenses? You cannot use feelings to buy experience, you need financial support in your relationship. Finances help you to buy experience, express your feelings and build closeness with your partner.

Love is important but it is not enough to keep your relationship floating in joy and bliss, there is a need for other things in the relationship,  hence here are three other things you need in your relationship.

1. Communication and Conflict Resolution

Effective communication is essential in any relationship, but especially in marriage. Love can bring two people together, but without the ability to communicate openly and honestly, misunderstandings and unresolved conflicts can build up over time.

Different Communication Styles: Partners may have different ways of expressing themselves, leading to misinterpretations. Regular, clear, and compassionate communication helps bridge these gaps.

Conflict Resolution Skills: Disagreements are inevitable. Couples who lack the skills to resolve conflicts healthily may find themselves in repetitive and damaging arguments. Effective conflict resolution involves active listening, empathy, and compromise.

Emotional Expression: Beyond just talking, couples need to express their emotions constructively. Bottling up feelings or expressing them through anger can erode the relationship.

2. Shared Values and Goals

While love is a strong emotional bond, shared values and goals provide a sense of direction and purpose in a marriage. When partners align on fundamental beliefs and aspirations, they can build a life together more harmoniously.

Core Values: Differences in core values such as beliefs about family, career, and lifestyle choices can create friction. For instance, differing views on raising children or financial management can lead to significant stress.

Long-term Goals: Couples need to have a shared vision for their future. Misalignment on major life goals like where to live, career ambitions, or retirement plans can cause conflict and resentment.

Daily Decisions:  Even small, everyday decisions need to align to avoid constant disagreements. Shared values help streamline these decisions, creating a smoother day-to-day life.

3 Commitment and Effort

Love is a strong feeling, but commitment and the willingness to put in consistent effort are critical for the longevity of a marriage. Relationships require ongoing work and dedication from both partners.

Active Participation: Both partners need to be actively involved in nurturing the relationship. This includes making time for each other, maintaining intimacy, and showing appreciation.

Adaptability: Life is full of changes, and couples must adapt together. This could mean supporting each other through career changes, relocations, or health issues. A strong commitment helps couples navigate these challenges together.

Problem-solving: Love doesn’t automatically solve problems. Couples need to work together to address issues that arise, whether they’re related to finances, in-laws, or personal habits. Consistent effort in problem-solving strengthens the bond.

While love is a powerful and essential element in marriage, it is not a panacea. Effective communication, shared values and goals, and unwavering commitment are equally important. Together, these elements create a solid foundation for a lasting and fulfilling marriage.
