During the 2024 May Day celebration in Delta State, tension arose between workers and Governor Sheriff Oborevwori regarding the issue of minimum wage.
Despite the theme of the celebration being “People First,” workers expressed disappointment when Governor Oborevwori failed to address the topic of minimum wage in his speech.
Their frustration boiled over, leading to chants of “No, no, no, we no gree, pay us our minimum wage,” disrupting the proceedings.
Governor Oborevwori attempted to assert his position, insisting that he would not be pressured into making a decision on the minimum wage.
However, the workers remained resolute in their demands, emphasizing that they had previously discussed the matter with him.
Efforts by the governor to calm the situation proved futile as the workers persisted in their agitation.
Despite the disagreement, Governor Oborevwori announced plans to establish a committee to investigate the workers’ demand for a salary increase, acknowledging the economic challenges facing the state.
In a joint address delivered by the State Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the labour leaders commended the governor for fulfilling his campaign promises to workers.
They emphasized the importance of politicians keeping their promises and expressed optimism that the governor would address the workers’ legitimate demands within the constraints of available resources.
