The University of Benin (UNIBEN) has taken a decisive step by indefinitely suspending the operations of its Student Union Government.
This action follows an incident involving an attack on Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party candidate for the governorship of Edo State, reportedly carried out by some students believed to be affiliated with the student union.
In a statement released by the university’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola, on Monday, it was clarified that the suspension stems from the events that transpired at the Faculty of Law and the University’s Senior Staff Club on Friday, April 12, 2024. The decision, made after careful consideration of a panel’s report investigating the incidents, was approved by the Vice-Chancellor.
Effective immediately from Monday, April 29, 2024, the suspension mandates all student union activities to cease. All union officers are instructed to relinquish possession of any union property to the Dean of Students’ Affairs by 4 pm on Tuesday, April 30, 2024.
To ensure the continuity of student affairs during this period, a Caretaker Committee comprising representatives from various faculties, schools, and institutes will be formed.
The university community is notified of this development, and compliance with the directives is expected from all former union officers.
