In a heartfelt gathering, Corporate Nigeria and political heavyweights united to honor the life of the late Herbert Wigwe, the Chief Executive Officer of Access Corporation Plc. Described as a titan, Wigwe’s legacy resonated through the touching ‘Night of Tributes.’
Aliko Dangote, Africa’s wealthiest man, led the chorus of praise alongside dignitaries from various sectors. Wigwe, who also served as MD/CEO of Access Bank Plc, left an indelible mark, passing away in a tragic helicopter crash in the United States on February 9, 2024, along with his wife, son, and former President of Nigeria Exchange, Mr. Abimbola Ogunbanjo.
The event drew influential figures like Adesina Akinwunmi, President of the African Development Bank, Jim Ovia of Zenith Bank, and Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance. Each shared sweet memories and highlighted Wigwe’s profound impact.
Dangote, fighting back tears, painted a picture of a loyal friend and a guiding light in business. He announced plans to immortalize Wigwe by naming the road to the Dangote Refinery as “Herbert Wigwe Road,” a fitting tribute to their enduring friendship.
Adesina Akinwunmi from AfDB praised Wigwe’s relentless pursuit of excellence, labeling him a “banker’s banker.” Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, Chairman of Coronation Capital, hailed Wigwe as a transformative force in the Nigerian banking industry.
Wale Edun, the Finance Minister, reminisced about Wigwe’s unwavering support, describing him as a pillar full of knowledge and creative thinking. Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo Olu, highlighted Wigwe’s leadership during the challenging times of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, emphasized Wigwe’s belief in Nigeria and his unwavering commitment to the country. Olayemi Cardoso, CBN Governor, recognized Wigwe’s pivotal role in elevating Access Bank to a premier financial institution.
Segun Agbaje, the CEO of GT Holdings, shared a personal touch, remembering Wigwe as a colleague, friend, competitor, and brother. Their last conversation, just two weeks before Wigwe’s untimely demise, revolved around Wigwe’s passion for his university.
In celebrating Herbert Wigwe, these tributes echo not only the loss of a banking icon but the departure of a cherished friend, mentor, and visionary force in the corporate world.
