A devastating tanker explosion rocked the Eleme section of the East-West Road in Rivers State on Friday night, claiming the lives of at least five individuals and engulfing over 70 vehicles.
Eyewitnesses described the horrific scene unfolding when a petrol-laden tanker collided with a heavy-duty truck, triggering a catastrophic spillage and subsequent ignition.
An eyewitness, recounted the harrowing ordeal, noting how the inferno consumed numerous vehicles stranded on the Akpajo-Onne Road due to ongoing road construction, leaving occupants trapped in the flames. Motorist Precious described the chaos as vehicles blazed and people desperately sought to escape.
Blame was partly placed on the ongoing road reconstruction efforts, causing traffic congestion and worsening the severity of the incident.
Confirming the casualty toll, Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the State Police Command, disclosed that five individuals lost their lives in the disaster, with law enforcement personnel deployed to maintain order.
