Pastor Idowu Iluyomade of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) City of David has been suspended for three months by the church’s Governing Council.
The suspension follows public outcry over an extravagant 60th birthday party for his wife. Pastor Charles Kpandei from RCCG Resurrection Parish has temporarily taken over leadership of the parish but has reportedly received a cold reception.
Sources within the church have indicated that members of the City of David parish had been anticipating Pastor Kpandei’s arrival.
High-level RCCG officials had to confer with influential members of the parish beforehand, recognizing Pastor Iluyomade’s significant influence within the congregation.
The church needed to secure these members’ confidence due to uncertainties surrounding the suspension and potential backlash.
A source commented,
“They needed to get the confidence of these top people because of the great influence of Pastor Iluyomade in the parish. The RCCG was not sure of the outcome of its move, so it had to be discreet. He may not be returned to the parish after the suspension.”
The suspension comes just three months before the church’s convention, leading to speculation that this move might be a step towards permanently removing Pastor Iluyomade from his current parish.
The source added, “It may be a way of taking him away from the place permanently. He has spent many years in that parish. He needed to be moved.”
Contrary to some beliefs, Pastor Adeboye, the General Overseer of RCCG, did not personally suspend Pastor Iluyomade.
The Governing Council made the decision, which some consider to be a necessary but delayed action.
The church needed time to investigate allegations and complaints related to the pastor and the church’s practices.
The suspension aims to address the concerns raised by the public and within the church community, reflecting RCCG’s commitment to upholding its values and accountability.
