President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated a 31-man Presidential Economic Coordination Council (PECC), consisting of himself, the Vice President, the Senate President, and the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum.

Also, a 19-member Economic Management Team Emergency Taskforce (EET) has been established with the mandate to devise a comprehensive six-month plan of economic interventions for 2024.

Approved by the Federal Executive Council, the EET is tasked with meeting twice weekly to draft the intervention plan, to be implemented within two weeks of inauguration. Comprising ministers, governors, and private sector members, the EET reports to the PECC headed by Tinubu, which includes ministers, the CBN Governor, and private sector representatives.

In response to challenges facing the economy, Tinubu’s administration aims to streamline economic governance. These initiatives follow the creation of an economic advisory committee in February. Notably, Tinubu’s administration had previously abolished fuel subsidies and unified foreign exchange rates to curb currency fluctuations, although these moves caused economic instability.

The newly established PECC and EET are strategic measures to enhance economic planning and implementation, with a focus on addressing existing challenges. PECC members include Vice President Kashim Shettima and key ministers, while the EET comprises the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and other relevant stakeholders.

Over the next six months, the EET will prioritize the swift implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of key initiatives to advance economic objectives. Concurrently, the Economic Management Team, chaired by the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, will support the PECC’s efforts.

These developments underscore a cohesive approach towards improving the nation’s economic management, aligning with existing structures such as the National Economic Council. Tinubu’s administration seeks to bolster economic resilience and foster sustainable growth through collaborative efforts across government and the private sector.
