Plateau State Government has stepped in to cover the medical expenses of Mrs. Hauwa Shagari, a pregnant woman whose hand was severed by her intoxicated police inspector husband during a dispute over N20,000.
The incident occurred in Jos on Wednesday, and the State Police Command has confirmed it, noting that the case is under investigation at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Commissioner of Women Affairs, Mrs. Caroline Dafur, revealed that the seven-month pregnant mother of three is receiving treatment in the hospital, with the state government footing her bills.
The state has also assumed responsibility for caring for her other children.
Dafur highlighted that the Ministry of Women Affairs and the Plateau State Gender Commission are conducting investigations into the incident to ensure justice is served.
She emphasized the devastating psychological impact of domestic violence, stressing that victims may suffer from long-term effects such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, and anxiety.
Dafur condemned the barbaric act and assured the public that legal actions will be taken.
She commended the prompt response of the Plateau Police in apprehending the perpetrator, urging victims to report violent acts to help combat such atrocities in society.
